83852-04F00 appears to be Canada-spec for certain models.
83852-04J70 is for US-spec and some Canada-spec models.

I ended up with a few permanent bubbles that will never go away. I have actually considered pin-pricking them and trying to flatten the film out, but everything else I've done to the instrument cluster lense has been, well, a cluster fu$k. I might beg screen protech for another piece and try it again, but would remove the lense from the truck first.

With the ScreenProtech? I used 3m paint protection film and would say it was a little less sticky, which is maybe why it was so easy to get all the bubbles out.

Bubbles weren’t the issue this time around, it was the fact that upon installation, water got into the inside of the cluster through the odometer knob and well, one thing led to another and the cloudiness behind the lens pissed me off, plus there was a large piece of lint, so I took it off to wipe behind it. Low and behold, more scratches!!! Put a microfiber cloth around the end of a long object, in this case a screwdriver, to get into the bottom crease of the lens where my fingers couldn’t. It left a couple deeper scratches. Oh well… I don’t know why I haven’t learned to leave things alone yet, there have been so many instances where I’ve tried to perfect something already pretty acceptable and have ended up making it worse, including this one.

Pisses me the hell of but at least I can say I tried… honestly nothing is truly perfect as hard as it is to say it. They could have just used like gorilla glass or something in the first place…

This was the 2nd lens I bought not including the original, which I tried to put film on to prevent scratches. At this point, I don’t really feel like buying another $35 lens and trying to apply more film to that, and then having to buy new film because I messed it up. Just feel like it’s not worth it anymore, though my mind will try to tell me otherwise… :p It’ll just honestly turn into a cycle of spending more money haha

Sorry this kinda turned into a rant, some of you may hopefully be able to relate.

My ScreenProtech improved a little with time. Still one or two bubbles, but I'm done messing with it for now.

I got a new one and had my friend at the Mercedes dealership spray clear on the lense and it looks perfect. No more scratches and it didn't cost me a dime to paint. He did this while in the painting of clear coat stage. He taped off the back, gave it a few coats of clear, wet sanded it a little and a nice buff with a micro buffer. I will never have scratches again. No hurry to install because mine is still in new condition. This was just a little experiment.

I made the mistake of using lens wipes on mine. You know the things used to clean $3000 camera lenses?

Apparently something that doesn’t damage a precision Japanese lens, leave scratches like hell all over this cheap shit plastic. Oh well.

Yeah I really don’t get why Toyota used such a easily scratch-able plastic gauge cluster. I used the ScreenProtect right from day one. Been great. Nice to be able to clean the gauge cluster, multimedia screen, and shift indicator anytime. All 3 items still look like new after almost 2 years.

As others have said, this is a great thread. What bums me out, which is completely unrelated to the scratched lens, is the fact that the gauge trim appears to be glued to the lens. I was really hoping there was a way to paint it black so it would match the rest of the interior trim that will be painted black in the near future. :annoyed:

From what I understand part - 83852-04J70 has the gauge rings in black. But try to find that part. So far I've contacted 4-5 Toyota parts places and got the same answer from each, part in on back order with no ETA.

I'm in the same boat, all of the "Silver" interior trim in my truck has been painted black. What's left is the trim around the gauges.

If someone know of this part being available some place please let me know. And if my understanding of it is correct, that it has black gauge trim rings.

This may be a dumb question. As I’m sitting here killing time at my kid’s dance class (God help me) I’m looking this part number up on different Toyota parts sites, and they all say it’s only for 2016-2017 tacos. I thought all 3rd gens had the same instrument cluster design. Will this part number not fit a ‘19 or am I being dense?

You’re right on the 16-17 on some sites. But others I have been on shows it for up to 22. And they all show little to no detail on it. Some dealers actually told me it’s just the glass and nothing else.

Tried looking for the cluster plastic lens for my dads 19 Tacoma. All dealers I’ve called all have said “item on back order, no ETA” as some of you already experienced. I am also confused on the “trim” some say black trim, chrome, etc.

However, everything I've seen so far makes no mention of black. It always says with chrome bezel. or without chrome bezel.

I installed ScreenProtech 2 weeks ago and popped all the trim off to install, making it a lot easier. So far it has improved the look and made it easier. It was a bit hazy at first then got clearer later hiding the scratches that were there. I only cleaned the plastic lens once since I bought it, right before the install and there were scratches from that one time.

Keeping this thread alive and well, I just spoke with a Toyota parts dealer in Lakeland, FL. Really cool guy. Very helpful. He shared with me an exploded diagram of what he had on file when I gave him the part number 83852-04J70. He seemed to think it was just the plexiglass piece and confirmed that his parts catalog referenced years 2016-2023 for this part number, not just 2016-2017. From looking closer and discussing with me, he seemed to think that the plexi can just be removed carefully by the tabs shown in the diagram.
Seeing as how I haven't quite gotten into pulling the dash apart yet for this project, I can't speak to that and confirm myself. However, I have an idea of what I will be doing now on my next off day. lol

If it is indeed just the plexi and a separate black housing around the instrument gauges, it could very well be a separate part that could either be ordered or meticulously worked on to paint the trim/bezel. Either way, now I want to know and will be pulling the instrument cluster out to investigate myself. Once I am able to do so, I will report back to confirm either way if someone else hasn't figure this out already.

I'm including the exploded diagram for anyone who is interested to look at.

The SR / SR5 models differ from the TRD+ models with the center cluster display for the 16-19 years I believe. I think the SR / SR5 got the same ones in the 20+ models and the SR ones are black and have red dials? Again not sure with the lower trim years
I would like a black internal one. I bought one a few years ago to take it apart to paint the insides black but cracked the lens trying to get it open.
