Remove and replace your scratched up instrument cluster plexiglass

Lol no confusion. I checked my dads SR and my SR5. Same lens

 

I can not for the life of me figure out what cluster lens is what and what the differences are. Both 04J70 and 04F00 say “fits” pretty much all the trims. Some sites might narrow it down to one trim level each but it’s just a mess. The actual lens itself didn’t have a part number on it that I could find when I took mine apart.

For what it’s worth, I ordered 04F00 from Sparks parts on eBay. It shipped and is delivering tomorrow. I’ll post up a pic.

Do you mind posting a pic of 04J70? I’ve searched here endlessly and can’t find many people sharing what the different part numbers look like. I did see one guy say the 04F00 matched his TRD OR perfectly so I have that going for me anyways at least. When I look at pics of trucks on autotrader they all look the same no matter what trim, so really it is a brain buster. I have not seen any truck with a light or chrome looking lens personally, so I’m curious what trucks actually came with the one you got.

I wouldn’t mind, though you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from a picture unless both were side by side under the right light conditions. To do that I’d have to tkwe the blue protective plastic off the new one all the way, and don’t want to do that since I plan on returning it. Called the local dealer and they said their warehouse had 04F00 so I’m happy.

from my understanding they’ll both physically fit and work fine, it’s just the color of the trim inside the lens that’s different, which I’m assuming correspond to different models. From what I understand the TRD models have the “blacker” or “darker” trim which I noticed to be the 04F00.


This isn’t my first lens either. 04F00 matched my truck perfectly before, but was on backorder when I wanted to get another. Got impatient and decided to try 04J70 because it said it fit.

Now I know.

Being that I have a TRD OR with grey/silver rings, I’m expecting this to be that. Not sure what one you’re after. I hear people say one of the numbers has black rings but I have never found any trucks on auto trader with black so I’m not sure where that comes from.

 

Okay, makes sense. Yeah I know they all physically fit; just trying to figure out which one has the rings I want. My rings seem to be a medium gray, not super dark or light. Definitely not black and definitely not chrome. I’m for sure interested to see what shows up tomorrow and if it matches what I have exactly or not. I imagine it will since I have a TRD.

 

Make your own decision for sure, but I would say 04F00 to match what you have unless you want a lighter color. What you can try doing is pulling your whole gauge cluster and see if there is a sticker on the top of the lens part that has a part number. Then you’ll know. I know the new ones do, usually on that black part in between the back of the lens where the screws go and between the front where the actual plastic is. On the top thinner section. I can’t remember if the stock one I had came with a sticker or not. Worth a try.

 

I pulled it out a few weeks ago (took the lens off and all) and I did not find any Toyota part number. I’m pretty certain the 04F00 will be right, but the curiosity in me really wishes I had all three part numbers in my hands to directly compare.

something interesting, I did find this pic on autotrader from a 2017 SR. Has the basic middle display, and looks like the lens creates that rectangle box. Wonder what part number that one is.

 

I’d be willing to bet that’s 04F00 but can’t say for sure because of lighting. That’s what made me think the SR’s have the darker 04F00, I’ve seen pictures of SR clusters like that.

 

Wondering how they created that box though for that different display. I’d think you’d need a different lens part # for that. Unless that window and the TACOMA are part of the cluster, not the lens. Maybe that’s what it is. And if that’s the case, then yeah I’d agree that lens looks like what I have.

and for what it’s worth I’ve never seen any of them with a light or chrome looking trim. Still curious what ships with those.

 

I think it’s a part of the cluster itself. My guess is that it would just go in the spot of where our LCD’s are

May not be able to tell since it’s at night. But my sr5 has those grayish silver rings. same with my dads ‘19 SR.

 

Yeah so far everything I’ve seen has the same gray. I think the “black” ones are just the way the light looks. Maybe not but I can not find a single truck that looks black. So strange and I would have thought tacomaworld would have it all sorted with pics by now comparing them.

 

None of them are “black” per se, one is just a darker gray and one is a lighter gray, more of like a silver. It’s pretty noticeable in person but cameras don’t always do everything justice.

 

Received the 04F00 today, definitely looks identical to the one on my 2021 TRD OR. The one I bought has the part number sticker on it. The original on my truck did not.

 

Your final lines just above above are most appreciated. I was thinking about trying the Meguire's plastic polish for convertible plastic windows, aircraft windshields, and so forth. I have used it on both, and it never ceases to amaze me how it will restore vintage vinyl rear windows to an almost factory fresh look. I will not attempt it after reading this. Replacing clear the panel face is on my bucket list of future jobs on my 2014. I'm hoping the process is similar to the 3rd gen trucks. Mine is scratched, but not to the extent it sounds like here for the 3rd gens. It looks pretty good from straight on, but the scratches can be seen from an angle.

 

After reading this tread and from seen utube Chloe Kuo and other great videos of the installation I ordered from Screenprotech

Since, when I got my new 2016 Tacoma and now my new 2022 both came with scratched up instrument cluster, screenprotech was an easy fix and I'm really happy with it. I just decided to removed the top part that goes around the instrument cluster, it was so much easier to install.

you can watch this video in how to remove the front part of the instrument cluster, and it was so much easier to do it, also remove the ones from the stereo too. I just put a microfiber towel under each time.
