Replace factory taillights on 05 Tacoma w/ LED lights marketed for 2009-2012 models ?

I have a 2005 tacoma pre-runner double cab. first year of the 2nd gen. I wanted to put the LED tail lights you see on newer models. I believe this may have started about 2009 ?? I found a set advertised as replacements for 2009-2012, does this mean they cannot be easily used as replacements, or at all. I need to be very certain, thanks for your input, greatly appreciated.. 2005 tacoma does not come up when you use the tab to see if the part fits your truck, but I'm not sure if that is completely certain, since the site may just be presuming a replacement for the only years it was actually an OEM-related product, not the years it additionally would fit perfectly too... Also, are these cheapos if anyone knows, is it a big mistake not to use the actual OEM replacements IF they are compatible, which is the BIG question, plugs, etc.... wondering if I will need to be prepared for some blown fuses in the process of swapping them out....................... all 2nd gen tacomas tail lights are the same plugs and same size so youre good

 

The enhancement seems a no-brainer for $150 range..... I figured there HAD to be a show-stopper... the harness or wiring or plug.... everybody feel this brand will do the trick ?! Thanks guys.

 

ya they look good...check on here first, sometimes members want to change out their tail lights and post their brand new led tail lights from $100-200

 

Just be sure to run a bead of silicone around the seal where the lens meets the taillight housing to help ensure that they are water tight and you should be set

I wouldn't expect to blow any fuses; you'll have the lights off when you swap things over.

You're switching from incandescent bulbs to LEDs though. You may need a different flasher, or have to add resistors to make the turn signals flash at the normal rate. Lots on this in the Lighting section.

 

turn signals arent led...only the brake, unless he buys aftermarket led bulbs

 

Ahh... right you are. Was still thinking of the ones in the other LED tail light thread that's on page one today. They appear to be all LEDs.

Just installed 09+ led taillights on my 07.
Won’t stop popping the fuse. Any idea why?
Only thing different in the rear is I’m running an aftermarket tow plug system that piggybacks off the taillight signals and power but that’s it

 

Could be a short in the taillights. Try undoing the last thing you did, put the old ones back in and see if it pops. If not, then change one at a time and see if it pops after either side.

I don't know how your tow plug is wired up, but could you try disconnecting that as well? could be a short in that, or the wiring to it, that got uncovered when you moved the harnesses around.

 

its probably the tow plug tapped signals.

 

Maybe the 12V pin is touching the ground pin the bulb sockets.

How ghetto is this aftermarket "piggyback" connection?
