    Gentlemen,

I'm ready to replace the OEM stereo head unit in my 98 Taco SR5 with a Nakimichi CD 4 Ch Stereo I had in my 90 Toy pickup (since sold). The dash take-apart is giving me fits since I don't know what to disassemble first to gain access to the stereo mount(s). Wiring is no problem - been there/done that dozens of time but I don't want to damage my very-cherry dashboard/instrument panel. Anyone have/or know where I can find step-by-step disassemby info for the center dash stereo section???

You can e-mail me if you desire. This old man would greatly appreciate any assistance rendered.

    Chief Chuck - OKC

    Well remove the AC button
The knobs for AC, heat/cool, fan select, and that face plate.
Then take out the ash tray
Remove all teh screwes you see.
Remove the the side pin from the bottum
Look it all over and remove mor screws if you see them.
Remove the plastic thing from around the shifter and the screws that hold it down..

THen pull the plastic face off the dash. it should come out with some force.
    But double check for screws.

Now remove the screws that hold in the radio and you are home free.

Thanks ubermx5, but I'm still a little confused. I have a 5-speed (floor shifter) manual. Why would I need to remove anything around it. Also, does the AC/Heater control panel back plate snap/pop out after removing the knobs (like when using a little plastic pry tool)? And, are there screws holding the center black panel (around the vents, AC controls and stereo unit) or does it snap out from clips?

Sorry for being so thick headed but I don't want to tear up a well preserved center dash panel needlessly.

    Thamks again, Chuck

You have to remove the plastic around the shifter to get al all the screwes.

Also remove the AC button first then the panel. I scratched my AC switch.

I wish i had pictures. but i think there are 5 to 8 scews.

    Crutchfield might have free info...

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to
prevent an accidental short circuit. Remove
the climate control knobs. Unclip the climate
control trim panel and remove (2) Phillips
screws exposed. Unclip the dash trim bezel,
lift up on the bezel and remove.

the ac panel pops out after the ac button... there is two screws directly behind it one on drivers side is at an angle up and one on passenger side is straight in... after the ashtray is removed you can access the 2 or 3 screws there... you may or may not have to remove the trim infront of shifter depending on your console style... my console is the small one that only goes around shifters but some run all way to seats and dash.... also after all screws are removed the black trim will pop out from the top... it has like 2 small push clips holding it as well as two plastic tabs at bottom... if you pry too much at bottom you can snap these

I sincerely appreciate the help, guys. With a 3 day weekend coming up, I'm going give it a shot and hopefully (and finally) get my fantastic Nakamichi CD/Stereo head unit installed in my Taco (used it for 2 years in my '90 Toy pickup...Awesome!).

You guys are great...this sight ROCKS.

    Cheers, Chuck
