I have a basic, 2WD Tacoma that I think I need to replace the passenger side front wheel bearing on.

It's been a while since I've replaced front wheel bearings on a 2WD truck - is there anything special about replacing it or is it pretty easy (as I'm expecting)?

I *think* my part number is: 04421-35020 ( https://duckduckgo.com/?q=04421-35020&ia=answer ) - does this sound right?

    Thank you,
    Ed

Why yes sir, I DO sell them as complete assemblies. Typically cheaper than most can replace them in any shop for sure. @EdFlecko, check my signature for a link to the thread about mine. They are preassembled, with new bearings, hubs, bolts, and seal.

    I *think* you're talking about a pre-runner hub, aren't you?

    I have a basic 2WD and it's not a pre-runner.

mmmmm hang on a sec. whats your full truck info?

I want to check because if you have a sealed bearing, you'll need some machinery to rip them out and push them in. unless you have a press setup with a bottle jack that you can use.

or you can do what this guy did.

but if you really have tapered inner and outer bearings like in the link, you don't have to sweat it at all. just make sure they go in clean and greased.

    Right - I have a basic 2WD, X-tra cab. It's not a pre-runner.

Ahh. Those are different then. Not the same as my kits. I would check, but as I recall the 5 lugger uses the old-style cup bearing that you can remove and regrease. I will have to double check that again.

yes this is how the 5 lugs are, they are just standard style old fashioned slip on bearings with grease caps.

I highly recommend you closely examine the brake rotors and if there is any question, replace them and brake pads too at the same time. I say this because on 5 lugs the only way to replace the rotor is by pulling off the hubs since the rotor fits onto the hub from he back side even though the bolts are on the front side of the hub.

that guy uses a couple of depricated methods.

    1) you can remove the caliper without removing the brake lines. just hang the caliper to the side using a bungee, mechanics wire, or any method you want to have it hang off to the side while you do this.

    2) put a fine layer of brake grease on the back and rim of the brake pads and shims. this will help reduce brake noise.

I have a 2008 prerunner 2wd double cab that I need front wheel bearings for - do you sell the complete assembly, with the hub? My mechanic says his autodata quotes 4 hrs. each side for labor!!

Never mind - I see you have them for $275 each - ugh.

So now another question - are the front bearing/hub assemblies the same for the 4wd as the 2wd? Very hard to find the 2wd whole assembly. And why is the 2wd part twice as much as the 4wd part??

    They are not the same.

They're pretty easy to swap. You'll just need a socket for the axle nut--I think that was a 36 mm for my 4x4. The wrench size for the hub bolts isn't anything unusual.

I did both of mine at around 70k when I thought the left one was going, but it was actually my needle bearing. Sounds like it was good preventative maintenance though.

I bought mine from @nj636, only reason I picked him over Bill was price since I was buying two rather than one. If I were just buying one, I don't know how I would have decided who to buy from since their prices are the same!

How did you press the hub out of the old bearing and into the new one? I've got the bearing assembly without the hub.

Bamatoy - you say you use KOYO bearings - what is the factory warranty (not YOUR warranty) on those - 10 years like the Timken?

Prerunner assemblies are pure bolt on and no 35mm axle nut to worry about torquing. Remove the old assembly and bolt the new one on. This is an hour job for each side if it's your first time doing it.

Do you make front wheel bearing assemblies for an 04 4wd Tacoma DCSB? If so how much? I'd love to not have to press the old bearing out & the new one back in plus seals etc. So far I can only find the assemblies for the 2nd gens that are already put together. I still would wave to disconnect the spindle to put the hub in though, right?

Unfortunately because of the design, there is no real way to make an affordable setup for the 2004 and older Tacoma. The bearing is pressed directly into the spindle itself. In order to replace yours you would need to remove the spindle, get a new bearing and outer seal (I recommend Timken/Koyo from Rockauto.com) and take the assembly to a shop that has a press. Typically a shop would charge between $40-$60 for the press work.
