Ok, so my truck got broken into last night (jerks, f word) and now I need a new stereo.

I had a Pioneer NEX-7100 that was pretty decent, but it's now gone of course. My dash is jacked, cracked, and my airbag lights are on so they messed my stuff up pretty good. So frustrating. Got my iPod and three sunglasses too.

I'm looking for the best replacement for a double din stereo. I'm thinking some of Pioneer's new Double-Din options that don't have Maps. I don't need Maps and Navigation, so that will cut my price down a lot. The Pioneer AVH-2330 NEX looks decent. IDK.

Is the Pioneer AVH-2330 NEX any good? Any other recommendations on something better? I have the JBL system and will need new harnesses, steering wheel controls, etc. Fun.

Thanks for the replies @102605 and @2Loud . I think I have looked at both of those models listed above...I've looked at so many that my head is spinning with all of the different model numbers! I'll look again.

I believe the AVH-4200NEX has a detachable faceplate...I was leaning towards that model due for that feature (for trips to Mexico....), price, features, etc....but am having second thoughts due to it having a resistive vs. capacitive screen. I've read that the capacitive screens have better color and, more importantly for me, are brighter in daylight. I'm a little concerned about being able to read the screen in daylight due to the angle of the dash in the '07 Tacoma.

102605, I would be really interested in how it works for you.

What year truck do you have?

I have a 2018. Screen brightness in the Carolina sun with sun glasses on has not been a problem. Seems quite bright to me. Might be different in an '07 though. The main reason I got the AVHX5800BHS was the need for a multi-band EQ and time alignment. Nav, internal amp and other features did matter to me.

@2Loud - thanks for your comments. First time posting to the boards. Soon to be purchasing an '18 TRD Sport.

Question - is there anything you lose (i.e. backup cameras, access to vehicle configurations/programming) when going from the stock Tacoma radio to the AVH-X5800BHS?

My current Tacoma ('97 strip model) is way before touchscreens, so I'm totallly new to these. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hey @Geronimo1111 and @jmac98107 .. I'll help you out. I have a 2011 and my first pioneer install is different from the second. The angle it sits is based on your dash kit, and some are worse than others. So choose a good one and tell the installer to be aware of the angle..

Geronimo, resistive vs capacitive don't make too big a difference here. They're both plenty bright, I turn mine down and have an auto dim based on the time of day.

And jmac, yes and no. No you won't lose the backup camera or anything. They can run everything into the new stereo. However, 2018 models might have car information in the dash.. you might lose that. Not sure. I'd ask in the 3rd gen section for more info.

    Thanks for the info, OP.

So far, I found three different dash kits: Metra, Scosche and Best Kits (BK). The BK kit is a bit more costly at around $60 and is what an a dealer I found on Amazon is recommending.

I asked him why he recommended it and he had to check with his kit evaluator...he came back and said that Metra and BK have great installability, that the fit and finish on both was very good, but that they stock the BK at their 18 retail locations and have no need to stock both... Can't go wrong with either he said.

I'm interested in retaining my current dash's styling and I can't tell if the Metra or BK kits retain that styling...it looks like Scosche does...

I'll have to look into how they differ regarding HU angles... the '07 Tacoma is really at quite an angle.

So, OP, you're saying that your 7100 was bright? Have you installed a new HU yet?

@102605 Hows the AVH-4200NEX working out? Detachable face plate, yes?

I installed the AVH-4201NEX (same as 4200NEX but comes with the rear view camera) in my convertible a few weeks ago. Yes, the faceplate is detachable (comes with a sleeve to put it in) and behind the faceplate is an SD card slot and auto eq microphone input. I like the Android Auto features since i can access Google Maps, Spotify (playlists, songs, etc), and other apps all through the touchscreen. It has two USB rear inputs, AV input (which you can use for a 2nd camera), HDMI input, AUX input, Bluetooth microphone input (for hands-free talking), etc. all in the rear. The unit also has a motorized tilt feature so you can change the angle of the faceplate, so that might help you with trying to keep the sun from washing it out but even with my top down and the sun glaring i can still make out most of the screen.

I like the unit so much that i was considering buying another one for my other vehicle but i'm going to wait until Pioneer comes out with a 4200NEX series that includes wireless Android Auto, maybe that will be in next year's model. Last week when eBay had their 15% off coupon you could get a brand new 4201NEX for $440.

Yeah.. I added an 8100 NEX and it's still plenty bright. I turn it down at night.

But yes, because of the new install the angle isn't the best, and sometimes the bright Vegas sun makes it difficult to see.

let's put it this way. I am anal and very OCD, I thought for sure I was going to make them reinstall it.. butbwcause of the angle. I never have, did. Its fine. I have a thread somewherethat shows how both of them looked installed let me find it

Found it..the first photo is my new stereo, and has a pretty bad angle (but now I'm used to it, I don't mind). I like how professional it looks and that the surround matches the interior texture and color.

The second one is the Scosche, or at least the schosche I bought a few years ago.. it is smooth and does not match the interior texture. However, I prefer this install way more. I used to set my phone on the recessed edge, and it not only hides from the sun, but it's FLAT.. I do want to go back, but don't mind the new one now that I'm used to it.

Oh and @NIU_Huskies the wireless Android Auto Pioneer got released about 2 weeks ago ;)

Replaced my Pioneer AVIC Z130BT(for sale btw) for Kenwood DNX 875s. Scosche dash kit along with anti-glare screen protector. Loving it so far.

OP, that link to the other thread is super helpful to understand the different angles between Scosche and Metra... So, it looks like Scosche has no texture and Metra has texture but a bad angle...Man, why couldn't someone combine the two important features?

I'm wondering what the BK kit looks like. I'll see if I can find out and report back...I went to the manufacturers website, but it was slow as heck...going to have to revisit. Thanks for the heads up.

Update: Looks like the Amazon dealer I am texting with buys through PAC...so the Tacoma BK dash kit is at the following link:

    https://pac-audio.com/catalog/best-kits-installation-accessories/bktoyk972s

I can't make out the details...so I went to the manufacturers site...but slow as hell...maybe their site doesn't play well with Firefox...

    Here is their site: http://aius.net/productlocator.php

I searched for the dash kit part number BKTOYK972S and am still waiting for it to load...:annoyed: Maybe someone else will have better luck. I think I'm going to e-mail their support and ask them to send me a picture of the dash kit...I can't make out the details on PAC's site...:frusty:

@outxider Does that Kenwood have a capacitive screen? Can you share where you bought and for how much?

Yes, capacitive screen. Never had capacitive screen until now and it functions exactly like an iphone. Very responsive and fast. I really like Kenwood's UI, simple. Hooked up both front and rear cameras. Connected my existing system and it sounds great. Really need to take some time to tune it.

    Absolutely everything you need:

Retains backup camera, steering wheel controls, USB charging and AUX ports in my '17 for the dash using the Pioneer AVH-X58000BHS radio. Super easy to install and the module is easy to hide. HIGHLY recommend.
