I don't know the reason why, but I don't have the switch or the pad. I've found the switch and the pad online but I'm wondering if the wiring harness on my car has the cables already. I have a 2016 Tacoma TRD Double Cab.

I thought QI was part of the tech package that give all the safety stuff and the moonroof on the OR/Sport models. Do you have the tech package?

As for wiring, generally, even if it isn't going to be connected it is cheaper to use a single wiring harness for everything since wires are so cheap. That would indicate the the wiring should be there, just not used. I cannot, of course, verify this as I have the QI charger in mine.

If you look at Toyota's website, you'll see that Qi is not listed in any of the optional packages. It is listed as a standard feature for all TRD trims tho. For example, I do not have the Premium/Tech package, but I have Qi.

I think you are correct in the second part tho. I had a couple older BMW's in the past, and they would wire all their 3-series cars the same, but only add the end components based on whatever options were spec'ed out. So many of us would buy a base model and then try to find the specific components we wanted later. This way we didn't have to buy an entire package (with some extra functions that we didn't want or need) and instead we only had to buy a few small things to get exactly what we wanted. :) I would imagine that Toyota does the same because wires are cheap (so it wouldn't save them much money), but it does save production time to just produce them all the same.

How sure are you that you have a TRD? qi wireless is standard on TRD trim.

    Are you in Canada?

100% sure I have a TRD Trim Tacoma. I live on a small island in the pacific called Saipan about 100 miles north of Guam (Us territory) I guess the Toyota dealer ordered them from the factory as it is. I also don’t have the premium 7 inch head unit that is standard in the US.

I am running with a Note 8 and have no problem other than heat build up if charged for a "long" time. I limit the charging to about 30 min at a time while driving and will pull the phone out to a cup holder for 10-15 min to cool.

With that said, it is rare for me to need to charge the phone much while driving as I have a wireless charger on my desk both at home and the office. Road trips normally happen in the wife's Rav4 because the Taco intimidates her. Even desk-top charges create some heat, typically less than the truck, and on occasion similar amounts to truck charging. I will also get some, not as much, heat build up when using a cable to charge the phone. I am sure that the quick charging of the device plays a fair amount in heat generation also.

The stock wireless charger causes most phones to overheat. If you don't have that problem, consider yourself lucky. My S8+ overheats within 5 minutes.

I'd be happy to have that but I don't. Though my S8+ is capable of fast charge, it doesn't fast charge with the stock wireless charger. And still it overheats.

I like the concept. I have the tray but mine doesn't have the wireless charging part. I set my phone into the larger compartment and, with the case, it fits but its tight. I'd need a tool to remove the phone. But I found this and it just might fit the bill. If it'll fit the overheating oem cubby hole then that won't just be empty space. I guess it's worth it to spend $20 to find out. If it ends up working, I could tie the wiring into the oem Qi charging power button. Of course, I'd need to remove power from the oem Qi charger as well. Itll be here Sunday.

So I ended up installing the fast charger mat on top of the OEM Qi charger and it works great so far. I wired a Quick Charge 2.0 accessory USB charger into a live 12v and hid the wiring. This is what it looks like and it fast charges as it should. Maybe I'll get around to wiring it into the OEM Qi power switch but I doubt it. It wouldn't be that hard to do but it's way down the list of stuff to do. I'd really like to build the magnetic Frankenmount. If the charger coil and accessory plug end up draining the battery, I'll have to wire it through the OEM Qi switch but I doubt I'll need to. We'll see.

Edit: I had to cut the lip off of the mat with a razor blade at the wire end because the phone sat on top of it. It still charged but it didn't sit flat. Now it does.

I started a new thread called 3rd Gen Tacoma fast charge magnetic mount because I didn't want to hijack the OPs thread any more than I already have. This is it in case anyone is interested. I thank the OP for the inspiration.

Any updates or results? Even if it isn't fast charge capable in the truck, it'd be nice to not overheat.
