Morning everyone.... I am about to receive my SSO front bumper in the near future. During the time that it was being fabricated I picked up a Smittybuilt XRC 9500 lbs winch. With the current location/access to the winch controller box being limited I thought it might be a good time to consider relocating it. Has anyone done something similiar? Does anyone know the size of wire I should use? I heard welding wire would be safe.

I purchased an arb dual air mounting plate that sits about the fuse box that I was thinking of repurposing to relocate the controller box and my fuse block etc...
    Thoughts?

I ended up just bolting a piece of flat bar in front of the radiator and mounting mine there. No issues so far.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't fully parse your post, I realize now you're not asking about location, just wiring and mounting. I don't much about welding but this should help you figure out the wire size.

    https://www.directwire.com/resources/welding-cable-ampacity-chart/

I looked up that winch and it's a 435 amp max draw. According to this site, you should be fine with 2/0 welding cable.

Hey thanks! I was trying to find something that would help me with that. Thanks. I was originally considering the location of the controller box like you had but I was concerned with weather and we'll I'm only 5'7 which would make plugging in the controller a pain in the ass.

Anyone else doing something like I am proposing?

They make cheap aftermarket wireless remotes for winches. Not that hard to install.

fair... but from what I have seen they are about 150 bucks or more. Am I wrong with my research?

Amazon: for a generic wireless remote, shouldn’t pay more than $20 USD delivered. Installation is three low voltage wires and a ground. Mine lasted as long as the winch did, about 7 years. I just replaced the winch so as far as I know the cheap wireless remote still works. One of these days I got to play with the old winch to determine if it can be resurrected.

Note: its not a problem with the solenoid (control) box. I jumped the winch motor and it is playing dead.

That's a good call. My winch came with a wireless remote but the few times I have had to plug it in, there was a slight bit of profanity.

Thinking of relocating and doing the wireless remote as well. Seems super clean setup.

Might you be able to elaborate on that some? Could you provide me the methodology that that you use? Do you use welding cables?

No problem sir. Yea I ended up calling smittybilt they indicated a gauge wire then I went bigger. Based on some ratings it looked like welding wire was the best approach.

In the end it's just a typical rewire job.
