I would not stand for 5 times. I would have thrown several fits with toyota. I would take a picture of the trips every time I turned the truck off.

Mine has reset 9 or 10 times. They would have told you the same thing they have told me. Mine has been looked at 3 separate times.

Like I said before, mine is supposed to be fixed on the 24th. Whether the same fix is applied as the other poster I do not know. Whether this will be a standardized fix I do not know. If Toyota has to pull everyone's module, send it back to the factory for repair/replacement and then send it back to the dealer, it will be a very expensive bill for Toyota with the labor, loaner cars, etc... I am hoping my fix is different than the other poster's. Something easier and quicker means a better chance everyone can get their fixed in a timely manner without having to battle it out with Toyota. Most of all I am hoping they have found the issue and can identify a bad module and aren't just replacing a part hoping that the odds are in the owner's favor that they end up with a good module.

I first reported this problem to Toyota in early November. Was I the first person to do so? I don't know. Probably a good chance of that. If that is the case I think its a pretty good effort for Toyota to come up with a fix in just a few months knowing the possible expenses. For everyone that notices this problem there are probably 20 who never look at the trip meters and in general don't pay attention to anything on their vehicles and are clueless about this issue.

Is there a possibility that the total odometer will reset when something like this happens? The government will be on Toyota if that is possible.

I'm glad it's only happened once to me in 3 months.

What is the fix that someone had? I couldn't find it in the therad

That would be sweet if the odometer reset every time, I could live with that..lol

As much as I'm aware the said they replace the "odometer module" whatever that part is. And it had to be sent out to match the exact mileage I had on the vehicle...

And just a FYI , after the fix its been like two weeks and no issues as of now..."knock on wood"!!!!!!!!!

Nice, I have to call and schedule something. My 5000 mile maintenance is coming up... I've been dragging my feet, only because I've had a few trips planned, specifically because I got my new TRD 4x4 OR... so finding a week to give it up has been challenging.

This just happened to me yesterday when I made a quick stop at the grocery store on the way home.

I agree with a previous poster who mentioned that it sounds like a software issue. I almost wonder if it's not caused by some sort of clock skew issue. Does the vehicle pull time data from GPS or radio? For example if the last time before I shut the engine off came AFTER the time data when I start it back up again. This makes no sense as time doesn't go backwards, but if there is some clock skew from GPS or something and I stop for short enough amount of time it could produce this situation. At that point the software gets confused and resets a bunch of trip meters and tank MPG data.

I'm totally just voicing a made up theory, but if anyone has details that agree with or disprove this theory that would be interesting.

Regardless, I've called my dealership and have an appointment to have it checked out next week.

Bummer about my new truck though.

Trip A & B were randomly resetting. Now they reset with every fill up. This tank did two resets all other fill ups were only one reset. Can't wait for the fix. Wonder if Toyota would give us an incentive for our troubles ?

That's good to hear. Swimmer is slated to have it done this Thursday I believe. Anxiously waiting to hear about his experience too. Between the two of you, when my truck comes up on 5000miles total, I'll plan to have it done. I'm having a reset with about every tank now, and not at time of refill. Usually its with a couple hundred miles on a tank, though I know it did in fact happen with one fillup.
A couple other things I'd like them to look into like slack in either the third member, or the drive line. I have repacked the U-joints which accomplished nothing.

I have 5,900 miles on my truck now, and reported this situation to the Toyota USA telephone folks and also to the selling dealer at my 5,000 mile check up. Of course, both parties said it was the first time they heard of it!
I get a reset on virtually EVERY tank, and have never gotten past 300 miles on a tank without a reset. So, do the repair orders say anything I can take to my idiot dealer? If we start to produce the software version to the dealers, they will have to fess up to the problem. I do hate to lose the truck for even a day though...

9 or 90 it doesn't matter, he has no reason to lie to me , and I was one of the first to document the problem and get it resolved. I bet most of the trucks are doing it and the guys jst aren't noticing it. If you don't use your trips you would never know the difference.

Good point! I hope the fix works. Our trucks have millions of lines of code in their dozens of CPUs! Not surprising there are bugs.

I dropped my truck off at Toyota of Kirkland on Monday for this issue. I told them it would probably be hard to reproduce, but that I was certain someone at Toyota knew what the issue was from what I read on this site. They called yesterday and said the odometer and other components had to be replaced. I asked if it was a known issue and they said it was. Anyway, another truck being fixed. Mine is around 2,200 miles.

AWESOME. They're acknowledging the problem. That's great news.
