    By replacing the combo meter.

That's why I called Toyota Corporate to get a case #. It's an intermitting issue that you can't duplicate easily and I'm not going to leave my truck at the dealership so they can drive it around or turn it on and off a million times to get it to reset. I'm leaving the country and made that aware to TC and he was supposed to document that; they can contact me back down the road but I'm not taking my truck in until they have a definite fix or have the part on hand to replace it.

I did get a case no. Guess I'll just go back to counting mile markers on the side of the road:)

Haha. I haven't really found TC to be much help in lighting the fire under the dealership's ass to check my transmission fluid, but hopefully they're different with this case. I'm probably just going to reference this thread and see if TC can push the dealership to just replace the combo meter.

When I called TC and explained issue, the nice gal (bless her heart) after putting me on hold, stated she had searched all related "tachometer" related issues to no avail. I said (yelling) "TRIPOMETER, NOT TACHOMETER!!" She responded she had searched both. I got my case no. and ended the call.

OK... here's the update to my visit to my Toyota dealer. Dropped the truck off last Wednesday morning, April 6th. Got a call from the Assistant Service Manager on Friday saying they had ordered the part and it would probably be Tuesday or Wednesday before they got the part in and got it installed. Got a call Monday midday that the truck was ready for pick up and the combo meter had been replaced. Had a talk with him while I was there to get what info I could.

He stated that they were not able to reproduce the problem, but knew going in that it was something random, and they probably would not be able to. He said they called Toyota and Toyota gave them permission to replace the part. So being curious I ask why Toyota decided to replace mine, when I see so many people on this site that are unable to get their dealer to replace theirs. His only guess is that it might be related to who is calling Toyota from the dealer. My dealer assigned someone who is a Master Diagnostic Certified Technician. He said that, usually, when Toyota gets a call from someone with this training they authorize the service, even though they were unable to replicate the problem. Also, added that if someone who is just classified as a Technician or Certified Technician calls it doesn't carry as much weight with Toyota as the Master Diagnostic classification does. So that's all I was able to get from my dealer, and just thought I would pass it along.

I haven't really had much time to see if the meter replacement has solved the problem, but did fill up and reset everything after getting the truck back. So far so good. Should I find out any more, I'll for sure post it here, and will update periodically to let everyone know if the replacement worked.

I have now concluded that the Ave MPG reset by itself is not random, at least for me now.
I've 2000 miles on it so far and every single gas refill ends up resetting the Ave MPG calculation.

That is normal. The Ave MPG is per tank.

    Can others confirm this?

Isn't this Ave mpg reset the whole topic of this thread? If not then i did not understand this thread.

confirmed, it is supposed to reset at every fillup. this thread is about Trip A and Trip B resetting at random times for no apparent reason.

I think the thread is about the A and B trip meters resetting. The label on the MPG page says "Average MPG per tank".

    I see.
Just checked mine. The ODO is 2013 miles. Trip A & B both: 1929.2 miles.
I have never reset myself so it looks like mine is fine but when I click UP button to check Ave MPG for each trip A/B: 1929.2 miles, it shows 14.5 mpg. This looks like the reset valur from filling up the tank.

Mine reset for the second time a week or so ago. Did it once around 2900 miles and the second time was around 14000. Took it in today, currently waiting on a call back from the dealer.

Sorry to dig this post back up, but I bought my truck about 2 weeks ago. I thought this was just a weird bug but my truck does the same and it will not hold the lighting preferences in dash either.

Going to take it in this weekend.

I'm planning to have this issue addressed in 1000 miles from now when the 5000 mile service comes due.
I'd like to know, of all those who have had the module replaced, repaired, whatever it is they do, has the fix worked? Or have there been reoccurances?
    Thanks!

My dealer didn't do anything as they claim they can't replicate the issue. They have contacted the regional manager and he is supposed to contact me after he has reviews the issue.. My advise is make sure you first open a case with Toyota Corporate and have the case number ready when you visit your dealer.

Yeah, I did open a case file with corporate months ago. I also log every reset event. 12 and counting.
