    Hey everyone!

So I was wondering what everyone uses to find new trails to ride on whether it be apps, google, paper maps, etc. (Recently onX came out with onX Offroard)

I'm brand new to this scene and have had trouble just finding some where I could ride legally in New England. I'm aware of the non-state maintained roads in like VT and NH but I cannot find maps for the life of me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(I apologize if this is has been addressed already somewhere else but I haven't been able to find it.)

Is there an interactive version of this? It’s a pain in the ass trying to look at all of this individual “paper” maps. Especially if you aren’t familiar with VT enough to know where you’ll be traveling.

    Well that's a great start!

I have to agree, interactive would be a definite plus

Yea. I’m trying to plan a trip through New England and I’d like to hit some class IV roads while in VT. But I only have a generally direction I’m going so I don’t really know what towns or counties I’ll be in cause I’ve never been to VT. So I don’t even know where to start with these maps. I’d be sweet if someone created a layer for GAIA. Include class vi roads in NH too since it’s pretty much the same deal.

First time hearing of GAIA but I looked it up and looks sweet. But yeah its a shame it doesn't have VT and NH Class IV and VI roads

This is for the National Parks system. A little clunky, but usable.

Pick a park, zoom in to see roads, click on said road to get info. https://www.fs.fed.us/ivm/

It’s the only version I have seen, it’s a pain but better than nothing. I would like to find a paper atlas with class 4 roads

Nice. I've been looking through and it takes some digging but you can see some for sure.

    Ha haa! True that.

Here is another one (put out by Magellan). Gets it's info from the USFS, but if you can see what people rate the Forest roads/trails at, if they signed up to do so. Something to play around with. Also, you can download the Magellan TRX app. and kinda do the same thing from your phone or tablet.. I have played with this up in the mountains just to see if it works. Just DL the trail to said phone, then run the trail.

This site is to complement the TRX7 series gps (which I do not have), but anyone can use it. https://www.trxtrailhead.com/@38.20837,-80.153641,8

That looks like a pretty cool app. Might have to try it out soon once things start to firm up a little bit.

Mass GIS shows all the roads in the state. Kind of have to search for them though. I use satellite view or compare to google to find areas where there are no houses and go from there.

The Gaia Topo layer shows you 4wd roads as dashed double lines.

You can’t go by just that. Gaia shows a lot of trails as dashed lines but are not legal trails.

I check them against town maps to see how they're classified.

Sounds like a pain in the butt. How do you know what map to look for (you know, assuming you aren't familiar with the area)?

All the towns in NH have road maps available online that show class vi roads(if they have them). I look on Gaia for areas that look potentially good, then check the town maps, and check the roads on google maps to make sure they aren’t just dirt roads with houses on them. Also there are lots of groups in the area that have already done their homework so connecting with them makes things easy too.

Yea, I get that part. The part I struggled with was that I made a route on Google maps, but then couldn't figure out which of the 400 town maps to go reference for trails in the area where I was. I didn't even know which county to even start in. Not to mention that I'm pretty sure my route traverse multiple counties and probably a dozen town maps. None of which I could cross reference to where I was on Google maps.
