I'm only at about 1000'. I've never noticed an issue with lower octane fuel before but maybe the leak amplified it.

Edit: I've also been traveling a lot in the past month and using several different fuel stations so I could've picked up some bad gas along the way.

You should be using 87 octane then as recommended by Toyota.

You're right I'll definitely be switching back once this tank is through. Fortunately theres a place close to my house that has ethanol free fuel. It's expensive but worth it to maybe avoid this in the future.

Glad you managed to hit up a reputable trans shop .
The full flush for $300 is a great deal ? Do they remove the pan to clean the magnets and filter for that price ? If so , get it done .
If they only do the flush for that price , I would begin to research a bit before you do a full flush . Although your only at 55K , I highly suggest a pan removal for contamination inspection . See the below link why
More info here on a proper transmission service and how to proceed. Although this procedure is used for a 2nd gen 5 speed automatic , the same rules apply for your 6 speed AC60 series automatic transmission
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...e-2nd-gen-transmission-pan-and-filter.726329/

1- an aftermarket leaf spring kit changes the universal joint operating angles . you can try this list to eliminate possibilities
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/vibration-diagnostics-for-all-tacomas-write-up.520607/

2- You were due for fresh spark plugs at 40K . This will help

3- Absolutely , Toyota has these trucks running at top efficiency in order to get the best mileage possible . When parts slowly wear down , your mileage goes for a crap and you begin feeling a ruff running engine . That rough running engine creates a symptom of a shuddering torque converter

Def change the trans fluid, cheap insurance.

Spark plugs sounds about right, it is needed regardless before you foul one and it won't start or something.

Well thats promising! I thought your mileage was low to be having trans issues. Another thought, when you have the trans fluid "flushed" you may just want to have them drain and fill and replace the filter. Sometimes those "flush" machines can dislodge stuff or flush gunk into the system from other cars that were done before yours.

If your interested, this video shows the basics. If it were me I'd probably stick with Toyota fluids and filters.

I would say go up to mid grade fuel . Try that first . Then do spark plugs . Could be a possibility transmission mount is going bad or motor mounts going bad . I'm at 142k mi on my taco and I get shudder only when hammering on really hard . I wanna get these solid motor mounts a guy make on here . Replace my transmission mount

Haha! I was just watching this video to get myself hyped up to change the ATF myself. I'll definitely stick with toyota stuff but they made it seem pretty painless and even remove the pan to clean magnets.

Thank you so much for your advice. I'll be replacing spark plugs, fresh oil, and trans fluid change this week. Probably going to be removing lift components as well soon. I don't wheel it much anymore and the brodozer look is not worth the mechanical cost. Again, thank you for all of your help.

Get a rebuilt transmission for a cheaper price, but don’t go to any mechanics. Go to someone you know well.

    Minimum of 87, not 87.

Well, seeing as the higher octanes have no added value for our rigs, cost more, and are not sold at every gas station, I stand by my statement.

    That's just your opinion.

I stand by the idea that if we are going to quote the manual, we should actually quote what's in the manual.

The only thing you're right about is that it costs more.

Our rigs are built to run on 87. We are N/A which as I understand it means that any higher of an octane is unnecessary. Now, please correct me if I am wrong. But if you’re going to correct me, can you please explain why I am wrong so I can learn from my mistake?

A high compression n/a would need higher octane

Lots of posts here about some users trucks and how they run on 87 vs. other octanes.

Normally I would actually agree with the intent of your statement. After 5 years and 65K miles in my truck, my experience differs though.

I know that. I’m talking specifically about the Tacoma. It isn’t a high compression motor.

What’s your experience? I’m curious. I’ve only ever ran the octane recommended in the owners manual for my 15 or so cars. Never once had a gas issue in my cars. Used to live in higher elevations where I ran 85 as was stated to me by the dealership to run. But that’s the only time I specifically didn’t run the normally recommended octane.
