Careful with that one from a liability standpoint. My buddies golden retriever figured out if he hauls ass, he can run right through the invisible fence and not get shocked. Once outside, he does whatever he wants. Usually he just wants to play. German shepard might want to eat the mailman.

My GS was friendly... but due to her size and breed, she scared a lot of people. Who's going to hang around with a 90 lb GS running at them, and you don't know if they are friendly or not

Trail cameras strategically placed will capture strange cars and foot traffic. Just place it so it doesn't get stolen.

We have had the same problem here as well. What I noticed on our street was that the homes that posted alarm signs, they avoided all together. I agree with others above suggesting installing security camera's and owning a big dog. My neighbor even bough a new gadget that somehow when someone walks a certain distance towards his front door, the sound of a dog starts barking.

I have the same problem at my house. I've been robbed twice this year. Both times while my wife and I were at work.

    What I have:
    1. Alarm system = useless
    2. Pit-bull = she's a good dog, too friendly
    3. Both of us are handgun carriers, in case we happen to come home and catch them.

Also I've talked to the neighbors to let them know what's been happening.

I plan to get a web based security/surveillance system to monitor activity at my house from work. That is when #3 above should be in effect. I work 5 mins away from my home.

Having a firearm only helps in a Robbery. Burglaries occur when you're not home so unless you have the gun with you, it will probably get stolen.

    Dog, Alarm signs, Surveillance cameras

Or you could rent a backhoe and dig a moat around your property with a drawbridge.

I definitely need to get a gunsafe! All we have now is a gun cabinet. Not very secure. The game cameras are a great idea! I closed up all the gaps in the fence over the weekend (needed to do that anyway since we bought a couple of goats). The only way onto our property now is through the gate at the driveway which is locked. The fence line is about 100 yards from the house in all directions so if they want something, they are gona have to carry it, break down the gate, or traverse the barbed wire fence which surrounds the property. Then they still have to get past our GSD which has been given our command to protect. Gonna get some game cameras though so that maybe, just maybe I can get a tag number to give to law enforcement. I wana catch these bastards!

You should train the goats to be killer attack goats.

IMO, alarms are a poor deterrent. Burglars are in and out before the cops show. An audible alarm call is not an emergency- get there fast, yes- but no lights/sirens, running red lights, etc. so the response is usually a couple minutes unless someone happens to be patrolling close by.

    My advice-

    Deploy the dog.

Get a camera system- but not one that is aimed at the front door. Get a cameras that look from corner of your house down the side of the house (so it sees anyone going through a window/door). Keep in mind that most burglars make entry at the side or back of the house.

Next talk to your neighbors about the problem- specifically the 'van' you mentioned.

Next time you or one of your neighbors sees it- call the police (not 911, just call the non-emergency #) and report the 'suspicious' vehicle.

Inform the dispatcher that your neighborhood has had several break-ins and you have seen the van on your street numerous times but you know it doesnt belong to anyone who lives there/has any business being there.

Get the tag number if possible.

I don't get the whole "guard dog" thing... A silenced pistol will take care of a dog in 1 second.

Someone obviously has everyone's work schedules figured out, which means someone is around scouting when you and your neighbors leave. Check your street and surrounding streets before you leave in the morning.

Very very few people burglarize homes with a gun, let alone a silenced pistol.

Most burglars hit when nobody's home for a reason- they don't want a confrontation with the homeowner. Not to mention they know that getting caught with that gun means they went from burglary to aggravated burglary/home invasion, which means several more years on their sentence.

Usually when you hear of homeowners being shot/killed during a home invasion, they are shot/killed with their own weapon...

while I like the punji sticks, you know that'll end up in a lawsuit.

    1. Another dog.
    2. a LOT of rose bushes - nature's barbed wire.
    3. A sign that says "I'm retired and in the NRA. My neighbor isn't."

Hi, i'm a broker for home security, If you wanna get a security system check out my web page www.enjoyliving.acnrep.com . The "WARNING: Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again" sign I think it's a good Idea too.

Alarms and dogs are all good unless your criminal is brazen. Sounds like he may be if hes hitting all the time. A steak will take care of your dog. If i were a criminal an alarm sign Might as well read "i got good shit in here". Watch "IT takes a theif" Episodes. Little things like leaving a radio on inside can make them think someone is home.

It would take a lot of steaks to pre-occupy my dog. He practically swallows them whole. One steak would be gone in seconds and he would be back to barking and growling at you.

Most thieves avoid houses with dogs because the dogs make a lot of noise.

^^This. I guess you could, in theory, distract a dog with a steak. This is why the best way to train a dog is to use a 'toy' as the reward- not food/treats. This way they're arent distracted by a steak- assuming you're disney world movie scenario would actually work.
