Exactly, Our GSD gets his favorite toy as a reward when he has done what we have ask of him. He gets a dog treat at random times when he has done absolutely nothing. In fact, most of the time he doesn't even eat the treat then. He continues with his business until he is ready to eat the treat. Scenario--Burglar breaks in, gives him steak, he says thank you by ripping off your nuts, then eats steak as dessert.

After doing some shopping and pricing, we are going to go with 2 webcams. One facing the front door and one facing the back. It will send us pictures via email when movement is detected. If they do manage to break in, get past the dog, steal the cameras and get away with the goods, at least we will have a photo of them to take to the Sheriff. Although with all the precautionary measures we have taken I don't see that happening. But ya never know. Thanks for all the great ideas guys. If none of this works, I think I'll go with punji sticks, a moat with a fire breathing dragon, and stake out in the closet with a double barrel shotgun. :D

You should stake out in the moat with scuba gear and pop up out of the water and blow them away. It would be intense!

Here in Ohio we have recently passed a bill called the Castle Doctrine > http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/5753 in short it says "if someone breaks into your occupied home or temporary habitation, or your occupied car, you now have an initial presumption that you may act in self defense and you will not be second-guessed by the State. The ability to protect yourself and your family from harm is important no matter where you are"

    I suggest you post this

My house was broken into almost exactly one year ago.

Since then, we've reinforced the vulnerable parts of the house, added an alarm system and gotten a dog (who, of course, is an adorable 4-month old puppy who sits in a kennel while we're at work, so she's no deterrent).

I live about 15 minutes from work, and if the alarm goes, I can be there in 10. I want to get a camera system so I have pictures in case I get there too late. My biggest fear is someone breaking in and harming the cats/dog. I couldn't care less about my stuff.

Yeah, I second the dog idea and the Camera setups.

I know my dog will start growling and howling if you walk into my house without having me walk in first, or if you happen to end up in my backyard/house without me there.

As far as DVR setups yes, get cameras that are wireless, a little more expensive but less cables and hassle for you and they cant just cut the video feeds going to the system. Have the system set up so that you can access it from any computer that has an internet connection and if you can make backups of what your system picks up to some site else where than your home. or like mentioned, maybe a camera used to hunting maybe cheaper and just set them up around the house.

I would think twice about a security camera. In theory its a good idea, but I have known houses to get burned to the ground after a robbery because of security cameras. An alarm will make them grab and run and not hang around and sift through your stuff and will let you know someone is there so you dont walk in on them. Just my 2 cents. Our home was broke into 2 years ago and I had installed an alarm on the morning they broke in and all they had time to get was laptop and a camera before they bolted. Worst part is fixing the crap they tear up getting in.

Since I work in Loss prevention, We investigate the burglaries at our retail stores and a lot of times the damage done to gain entry costs more than the merchandise lost. It's not uncommon to have $10,000 in damage for them to only steal $1000 worth of merchandise.

well thats the way it goes because they got a $1000 worth of stuff and all they had to do is break some stuff which they don't have to pay for.......... really what does the thief care how much stuff they have to break if they are getting stuff for free?

    1. alarm or at least the signs of one
    2. dogs of any size make noise and that is the deterant
    3. camras working or not are a deterent
    4. electified fences, door and window handles will get them if the rest fails.

    HAHAHAHAHA this is perfect!

I have a security sticker that says "Protected by 2nd Amendment Security" with a picture of a pistol in the background. Haven't had trouble so far :) I also have a security system too though.
