Merry Christmas to my Taco! Roof rack is in. I took a bunch of pix during my install, not sure if the OP is interested but if so I can post them along with my take on the installation. Not too hard, about three beers and one slight mishap with a Chinesium T25 Torx bit. (Hint: Use Craftsman). :)

Any idea how much weight the rack can support?

OEM rack is 100 lbs. (I'd say that's pushing it, too...)

It's my understanding that the roof weather striping/holes etc are the same from the 2nd gen to the 3rd gens...Is that correct?

I have installed two OEM roof racks now:

2nd Gen kit: PT278-35130 (my 2014 DCSB, 2 years ago) Hardware kit is 401941.
3rd Gen kit: PT278-35140 (my 2017 DCSB, today) Hardware kit is 401941A.

The 2016 ditch molding is different, it's now in two pieces, unlike before. The hardware, despite different part numbers, appear visually to be the same. The front brackets appear to be identical, and the rear three cab bolt holes also appear to be the same in size, location and spacing, although I can't definitively say that they are in "exact" same location. The installation manual spans 2005 to present, and the instructions are the same (I compared the instruction sheet with the old one that I still have).

    Compare:

    2017 front bracket
    20161225_153628.jpg
(LOL that's the same tube of silicone I used to seal the 2014 bolts 2 years ago!)

    2017 passenger side
    20161225_164714.jpg

The only real difference between the two installs that I could discern are that the bolts appeared to be lined up better than before, and that the newer part number cost $50 more than the old one (paid $250 shipped 2 years ago for my 2014 kit, this new one was $300. Bas***ds.)

For $300, did the rack come with crossbars?

Yes, the crossbars are integrated into the sides. You unlatch them and plug them into the opposite side of the rack. It's pretty slick.

I think the instructions are fairly clear. I just didn't see a response to the OP so I posted what I found for mine.

They are pretty slick crossbars. I only plan on dropping a kayak on the top, so 100lbs will be fine. Plus I'm sure I can figure out how to reinforce them later if I need to. The weak point is ultimately going to be the roof of the truck.

Hmm what can we do to strengthen the OEM racks? I got them because they swing, thus reducing drag when not in use.

I'm going to take a closer look at them tomorrow. They feel like they have a hollow section that you could run some rebar or steel strip through.

I would only try a method that retained the ability to fold them back up when not in use. That's pretty nice.

Tip: Bend down the front mounting bracket down a little bit so the roof rack "hugs" the cab a little better.

Is the weather stripping a part of the new rack kit?

Just installed them. It was really easy, but one of my wellnuts had weld inside thee threads. So I just drilled it out and put in one size larger screw. Worked fine.

Also, I didn't have much of a gap on either side. I have seen pictures of others on here with more of a gap than this:

    20161227_154605.jpg

Maybe it has something to do with when the rack was made.

I wish, just always thinking about saving money/gas if possible. Thus when I do get on the gas I feel better snout spending the extra.

I lifted my Taco on 33's. Gas mileage no longer plugs into the equation.
