    Just an FYI...
The belt won't necessarily have visual signs of wear. It can break at anytime without any warnings. It's the NYLON (or whatever that material is) inside the belt that gets stressed over time and can break.

Just because you think the belt *looks OK* doesn't mean it is OK.

Feels good to do your own maintenance doesn't it?

Janster, I will have to say that when I had everything pulled apart, I started to wonder if I should have attempted this myself. It was music to my ears when the truck started up.

bringing this thread from the dead...I'm about to own an 02 2.4 4cyl tacoma, with 110,000 on the clock. My brother currently owns and drives it. He told me there was recent tune-up done and I asked about the timing belt if it had been replaced and what-not. The mechanic told him it has a chain and not to worry about it until it makes nose, is this true? I know if it was a belt its time for a change but I am not so sure about it if it has a chain? Please help..

Its a chain. Dont worry about it. You can think about it after you are over 250,000 miles. :)

That doesn't sound too bad for a dealer. I had quotes from dealers for just changing my water pump. One dealer wanted $766, another $666, then an independent shop that is authorized by Toyota(Toyotechs) $466 and they would have included the belt & hoses.

I have 200,200 miles on my tacoma and haven't replaced the belts. I have replaced a lot of other things but not the belts or water pump.

    -starter
    -throttle position sensor
    -cat bank 2
    -both o2 sensors
    -ignition
    -muffler
    -intake

Its still running great. I know its well past time for them to be replaced, and am working on getting those replaced next. I have been non stop spending money fixing little things on my truck, because it was stolen. I am tired of putting money into it. it seems like i get payed and there goes my check. i try to replace stuff myself but im not that mechanically inclined. I wish there was any easier way to do things.

If the belt is still original, you have the highest milage I have heard of without the belt breaking.

Yeah I know what you mean about waiting it out. And I am. I just wish the maintenance would stop. I love working on it, just not the spending part. And I love this truck. Its my first truck I got it when I was 16 from my dad, and he gave me the title for it on march 13 of this year, for my 20th birthday. So I don't care how beat up it is. I just like it running good and looking good. When it got stolen it came back with a lot of body damage. I have to get the rest of the body fixed and get it repainted, which i have been holding of on doing for awhile because I have had all these minor things to deal with like the $600+ for the new cat and o2 sensor.

all in all i am going to run this truck dead. I love it :)
