So I'm guessing they didn't need to cut my rails this far back when installing the factory cover?!?

Can I get a zoomed out picture so I know where these plugs go? I'm guessing this is only needed for factory covers?

Here is a picture of the plugs and of the space they are to fill. I don't have a star socket to get the rail off so I will get one tonight and let all know how it goes. I am a little skeptical at this point. There is a plastic plug in the end of each rail. It looks like when it gets slid out the plugs will push into the end of the rails but I am not sure of the fit just yet. I may have to trim s bit off the plugs to get a image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg good fit but won't know till I get the rail off.

SMART! Yep, I laughed out loud and nearly spit on my screen when I saw $59. Beyond ridiculous.
The gasket material is a great idea or maybe some black foam pipe insulation from Lowe's would work great, too, and you'd save enough to fill your tank up 2+ times.

I don't mind paying a little extra for nice stuff for my truck but $59 for little rubber gaskets is insulting.

I sold my factory tonneau and these stayed with the cover. Too bad Toyota didn't just include them with every truck sold.

Better yet if they made the rail an inch longer the gaps wouldn't be there.

About the only thing I don't understand, is why the front rail higher than the side rails? That makes any cover not sit flush since the front bed rail is higher.

    ** See follow-up below. **

I got the plugs (62541-04010 and 62542-04010) and installed them tonight. Here’s a quick write-up if anyone is interested... hopefully this helps some folks decide which route to take. I have a canopy and water would literally run through the front gaps when it rained (driving or not), and I’m hoping to seal things up as much as possible. I went ahead and spent the $59 on these since I didn’t want to half-ass a bunch of sealant or calking all over the place (not hatin’ for those of you who went that route).

1: Take off the front rail by unscrewing the T30 torx bolts.
    Plug Write-up 1.jpg

2: Figure out which plug is for which side (looking at these pictures will help). Once you figure that out, set the plug like so:
    Plug Write-up 2.jpg
This will give you an idea of how much you might need to cut and trim from the bed rail. My truck did not come with any bed covers, so my bed rails were not pre-cut.

3: I used some painter’s tape to mask an outline of where I needed to trim.
    Plug Write-up 3.jpg

4: Pop off the entire bed rail. Simply pop out the rail by pulling up starting in the front and proceed towards the rear. The rail is held on by clips.
    Plug Write-up 4.jpg

5: Pull out your trusty Dremel. I used a Tungsten Carbide Cutter (9902)... It basically saws through anything. Get one if you don’t one one!
    Plug Write-up 5.jpg

6: Dremel away. I took my time and didn’t saw all the way to the painter’s tape so I didn’t trim too much off.
    Plug Write-up 6.jpg

    Plug Write-up 7.jpg

7: After I got the first big chunk sawed out, I would do a test fit by placing the bed rail back on (only the front couple of clips needed to be clipped back in) and placed the plug next to the rail to see how much more needed to be trimmed. Repeat until perfect.

8: Once enough of the bed rail was trimmed, I cleaned up the edges with a file.
    Plug Write-up 8.jpg

9: I could see there was a very small gap that water may or may not be able to seep through, so just in case I squeezed in some marine sealant (easy to take off down the road if needed).
    Plug Write-up 9.jpg

10: Put the plug in place. Tuck the plug under the lip of the bed rail.
    Plug Write-up 10.jpg

11: If all fits well, slap the bed rail back on.
    Plug Write-up 11.jpg
    Plug Write-up 12.jpg

    12: Reinstall the front rail.
    Plug Write-up 13.jpg

Here’s a picture with the canopy back on. Passenger side between the canopy (left) and cab (right).
    Plug Write-up 14.jpg

It’s a little ridiculous that there’s a gap in the first place, but I’m hoping this seals things up. We’ll see after a good rain... I’ll keep you posted.

FOLLOW-UP: Apparently the plugs by themselves did NOT stop water from coming into the bed. Last night I added some marine silicone sealant around the plugs and surrounding areas. We'll see if that helps after it rains. Kind of a bummer. I'll update when relevant.

Job well done Adamr. I will not be modifying my truck in this manner. I contacted Extang and they are sending me the patches they have. If anyone is interested in the two plugs I have let me know.

Mine came with these already installed. Did toyota send out trucks with the cover and these not in place?

This thread is for plugging the gaps when adding an aftermarket cover. I believe that all factory installed covers come with the plugs from the factory.
