Life is a flat circle. We are born, we die. It was only a matter of time I suppose...

I sat, slumped over in a bar stool drinking what little I had left of my beer. Pondering life, and all the mistakes and missed opportunities that came along with it. The jukebox blaring in the background, with a couple college aged girls shaking it to "cat scratch fever." In another life, I would have approached them and warned them of the pitfalls that had befallen me. Maybe it would have helped them down the road someday. Probably not. I looked down into my empty beer bottle, set it down, gathered my belongings, and headed out the door.

The night was brisk, but the snow was just a small flurry now. I hopped into my Tacoma and began to sob. Uncontrollably. My life as a surgeon was over. I clasped my hands together and tried to keep them from shaking. I just kept sobbing, muttering "it's over, it's over." I banged on the steering wheel, then grabbed it, and shook it as hard as I could, screaming and crying. Even with that, I needed another outlet for my aggression. I exited my Tacoma, and began to kick the tire. Over, and over, and over again. Next, it was total darkness. I awoke in a puddle of ice. Shivering. The back of my head cold and painful. I had fallen backwards and hit my head. I grabbed a t-shirt from the backseat, ripped it, and tied it around my head. I decided it was time to head home.

As I approached the first stop light, I began to sob again. The truck behind me honked. I looked up, the light was green and I continued on my way. As I drove, I shifted between cashing out my 401k and traveling the world, to walking out into the wilderness never to be seen or heard from again. Both options had their ups and downs. Scenario A included my family. Scenario B spared them from having to witness my failing health.

At the next light, I glanced over at the truck next to me. I wondered what his story was. Was he happy? Did he have a wife, kids? Would he go out slowly, peacefully, or in a fit of rage much like myself?

We began to pull away from the light when I noticed it. A hand on the back window. I found it odd, but my head was blaring. Vision was blurred. Perhaps I had just imagined it. The truck continued forward, so I got directly behind him. Again, I saw a hand on the back window. Perhaps just a buddy who had a little to much to drink. I decided to pull up next to him to get a better vantage point of the situation.

At the next light, I looked over at the gentleman. He was about 20 something, wearing a hat, and seemed to be wrestling with something in the backseat. The light turned green, but his focus was on the backseat. His truck did not move. On any other night, I would have proceeded on my way, but tonight, I was out of shits to give. I pulled my truck out in front of his, and proceeded to pull my .45ACP from the glove box.

When I reached his truck, he was half way in his seat and the backseat. I tapped his driver side glass with my pistol. He looked at me, and his eyes widened.

"What are you doing back there?" I said forcefully.

"Uhhh, nothing, my girlfriend's drunk, we are okay." he responded

"Let me check on her" I replied.

"Nope, nope, we are good man, mind your own business."

I tried to open the door, but it was locked. He quickly threw the truck into reverse, and I smashed his driver side window. I grabbed on and hung on for dear life. He began to punch me in the face as I held onto his door and tried to bring my pistol hand up. I fired one shot. Miss. I fired again, and hit him in the shoulder. The truck came to a stop. I found two girls in the back seat, one bound. The other bound by the ankles with duct tape around one of her hands. She was able to free the other and it was the hand I had seen on the back window. Come to find out, it was the two college girls from the bar.

By the time the cops showed up, my bandage was completely red from my head wound and I was holding a pistol on the driver. I'd like to think I looked a lot like Rambo.

I'll always remember that night. It was the night I followed an F-150 eco-boost in my Tacoma and pulled out in front of him.
