I have a 2018 that I've had for about 5 months now. I just noticed dots of rust all over. The worst is on the tailgate but there are also dots on the bed and doors. Nothing at all on the front fenders, hood, or roof.

    Is this a known issue?

If it’s just on the surface, take some claybar to it after a wash, then seal with wax.

Should I even worry about removing it? Why is a new vehicle rusting through like this? Is this a warranty issue?

Some guys get rust dust on paint when it's transported by train. Yours looks bad, is it still under warranty?

Its metal dust that sticks to the paint, then it rusts and discolors the paint.

Clean it off, clay, wax, and then just wash more often.

Hasn't been on a train. I bought it new in October so I would hope warranty would cover this. It's not scratched and it's on the sides and back.

It wouldn’t surprise if Toyota tried it though.

Life is way too short. Don’t sweat the small stuff. I hope Toyota makes it right.

Not sure how you know it wasn't shipped by rail to your dealer. Are you in central Texas? If not, this is actually a pretty common thing for vehicles that are shipped via rail to a distribution center and then by truck to that centers dealers. As recommended above, cleaning then clay bar will remove it. You will need to wax again after as the clay bar will strip the wax.

Take it to the dealer and get it fixed under warranty before you stress yourself out. Doesn't look like it's rising through. The paint would be bubbled if it was coming from the inside. I agree it looks like environmental issue. Where do you live? What do you do for a living? Nothing on the hood roof or fenders is a clue. It's not falling like soot or rain. Doors bed and tailgate imply you drove through something.

I wouldn’t say rusting out as the correct term. I doubt it’s rusting from the inside. Metal has embedded on the paint and that is rusting. I’ve used ironx on my previous white truck and that worked wonders.

    Do not touch it.
    Don’t try to clean it.
Take it right in to the dealer.

My 18 has spots all over it as well since this winter. I am going to try Iron-X should solve the problem. Let us know what the dealer says if you go that route.

    No.

Dude, buy this and be done with it. Spray on, let it work and wash it off. Then hit with your favorite wax/sealant/coating and you're good to go.

It's magic. I have a white truck which looked just like yours. My wife's car is also white and I used to to clear up rail dust this past weekend.

It IS normal, on every car. Not a Toyota thing. Just very noticeable on white vehicles. If you take it to a dealership they will F-up your paint and do more damage than this non-issue is causing.

Got the same crap on my truck. This does not occur on any of my other cars. I clay barred it off and waxed.
