Just a heads up to people (and fishing for advice as well), I noticed that the black plastic cap ridge on the top of my bed (bed rails) has been resting on my paint, has worn through the paint all the way around my truck bed, and is causing rust. You can see it very clearly if you lift up the edge of the cap and look under it, where it was resting on the paint.

I took it to the dealer and they said the paint warranty is long expired and suggested I shop around at body shops for a price. (read: piss off)

My argument is that it is caused by two toyota parts rubbing on each other and was bound to happen - no fault of mine, poor design by toyota. I'm sure it was caused by the weight of my canopy/shell, but it should be able to handle that weight.

    Thoughts??

No mud flaps, plasti dipped emblems, and rear bumper, Weather tech digital fit, Bed mat from tractor supply. Pioneer 4400BH head unit. B.A.M.F bed rail tie downs. AVS vent visors.
hmmm. I have not noticed this on my ’07.

also maybe some of it has to do with the area you are in.(very salty air, and probably roads) also moister in the air is probably high as well.(all though, humidity is high most days here till fall.)

I've thought about taking mine off but I also have some missing paint, no rust YET. I do take them off once a year and wax . Sucks living in the rust belt

Might be a good idea to sand off the rust and re-paint followed by a good heavy coat of wax. I would just leave the wax on without wiping it off since it's under the cap. I do the same with the fender plastic.

I would sand the area down, just enough to rough it up and put down some Herculiner, it will match the bed rails very well and add a cushion of protection. You can actually do the whole bed for less than 100 dollars.

This is pretty common on trucks with any sort of accessory which rests on the bed rails. The added wait distorts the plastic and causes rubbing.

A few members have posted before that they took off there bed cap and found the while length under the rails to be rusting.

Same thing happens on trucks with plastic bed liners in metal beds. Happens on the rails(if the liner covers the rails) and in the actual bed itself. I'd sand it down to bare metal and cover it in bedliner just slightly below the plastic

Traded in for a 2013 before the rust becomes apparent. Lots of rust underneath as well but they gave me 22 grand on a trade. DONE DEAL

Yeah, i had an 87' Toyota and the design of that bed was ridiculously stupid. You could see the spot welds after a while all along the wheel well areas, and they would rust out where the horizontal seams would meet along each side of the bed.
