Hi, So this is kinda long, and if anyone has insight to offer on the rust issue of older models now in recall I would appreciate some input or links I can check out

So I had my truck Krown rustproofed last week, and the tech took some pics and showed me some rust on the frame, near the welds and seams. It's like the rust is bleeding through from behind a layer of frame metal.

After having the rustproofing done I took it to my local Toyota dealer for a full inspection and oil change to make sure the truck was in good order as I bought it used. I asked them to look at the rust and report. They said they couldn't see any rust.

I was under the car installing side steps and you can see the rust clearly, maybe they missed it since the rustproofing was fresh. Anyway I took it back today to show them and the service mgr says a) it's normal to have rust on a frame, and b) I voided my warranty by having aftermarket rustproofing done.

I called BS on all that and pointed out that the rust is localized, and not all over the frame and other metal surfaces, like surface rust might appear on an undercarriage after being in service for a couple of years.

This truck was manufactured in April 2019 in San Antonio Tx, and probably not on the road until May or June 2019. So, it's not even a year old and this is its first winter and it only had 16,500 Km on it. It looks like I'll be having it out with Toyota Canada soon. I expect a long drawn-out battle. I would love some positive input, nothing like "I should have seen this before buying"... that's on me, I had a look underneath but did not see this, however, the facts remain it's not even a year.

Looks like Toyota would have figured this out by now, goodness.

Yes, the rust is bleeding out from between two layers of metal. No paint can be applied due to way it is manufactured, nor has Toyota ever bothered with wax/oil in there either. They finally began sealing the lower section in the last year or so... and now have a service campaign (or recall?) for non sealed units where they apply a wax to the gaps.

The first thing I did to my 19 when it came home, was to spray wax into those all those gaps, nooks, and layers... compressed air was used to force it deep into and then out the other side.

Inject or spray wax in at the tops on the green arrows.... don't be shy with it, follow with compressed air to force it through and until it's running out where the orange squiggly line is. Apply more wax to both gaps and call it good.

    This was bought used?

Kinda an atypical rust pattern on these trucks.

I’ll be impressed if he still owns this truck in 10 years.

I have a hard time believing that spraying on a rustproofing solution would void warranty. I don't think a dealer is really going to deal with this rusting issue unfortunately. Could always try another dealer.

Is there some warranty or promise there won’t be any rust? What’s is the dealer expected to do?

Maybe, but we all know that a rusted out frame is bad for resale.

definitely looks uncharacteristic of the typical type of surface rusting on these frames, you typically see it on the welds and behind wheels due to rock chips etc. I'd sand it down, spray with a rust preventer and follow up with FF or some kind of preventative.

Whoever did your krown def saw that and just ignored it and sprayed the proofing over it. Pretty lazy IMO

So far it sounds like I shouldn't be too worried? I plan on keeping the truck for a long time and having it sprayed every year. I had an Acura Integra from 1992-2006 and it was sprayed every year for most of its life and it never rusted out, even after 435,000 km it was still in great shape.

What is the wax you're describing, and where would I pick that up. Would I need to try and remove some of the Krown product first before applying for it to work properly?

I use 3M Cavity Wax Plus as it is very tenacious and high quality. It comes in aerosol cans (the wand kit is a sold separately) so you don't have to use compressed air, but you will use more to get it in the seam.
