Rust on Frame with A/C drain mod fix

No. Just use heater hose, no problems. My 4runner has the same issue, so I did this mod on it too, no problems.

This is true. But, where the ac line drips is is directly on the front of the frame, and it drops whether you run the ac or heat, so it’s the slow water drip that never stops. Premature rust starts in that area, so for $15 and a few minutes of time, it reduces my risk of premature frame rust as well as my fluid film protection.

 

Been wanting to try this mod but just haven't gotten around to it. Not sure the exact route I want to go since I've seen different guys in here go about it a little differently. Anyways, fluid film. How exactly did you apply that, and what exact areas did you put it on? Does it make it super messy underneath, like does it attract dirt all over it? If I lay under my truck to change the oil, am I gonna get this stuff all over me?

Yes, it’s a little messy, but doesn’t drip. Messy is better than rust.

 

Thanks for the great write up @Uptown2k ! Did this fix today. Since I bought my truck in October, I haven’t run the A/C yet, so the frame is clean. Fix took 25 minutes, and much of it was pulling & reinstalling the wheel.

 

Can you please describe what inside rockers means exactly? Lol that's probably a dumb question but I'm not 100% sure what that refers to. And also, you mean you actually put that stuff all over your tailgate? I've never seen this stuff in person so I'm trying to visualize it

 

Rocker panels. Remove the plastic instep protection/door sill pieces, there are holes that they snap into. Spray fluid film all in those holes. Ever see trucks rusting away just beneath the doors? They rot inside out, this can help prevent that. Your tailgate......remove the plastic panel lining the tailgate, the skeleton will be exposed, spray away.

 

I get to the rockers from underneath, IIRC 8 rubber plugs about the size of a nickel. Using the aerosol can with the hose attachment that comes in the kit you can get inside the doors through the drain holes along the bottom, have your windows up when you do this or it will probably get all over them. Like Riding Dirty said, pull the plastic liner on the trunk, just be gentle with the screws when putting things together. They strip with little force, and I think there are two sizes to keep straight. Down side, that stuff will be weeping out the doors and tailgate for months. It is designed to creep, making stains (which wash off) everytime things warm up. Unless you wash about weekly, get used to looking at it.

 

I’ve got 1500 miles on my 18 and these welds are already getting a bit rusty here. Just bought materials and doing this tomorrow.

Living in Hawaii, this is the first mod i did since the AC is always on.

 

I used 1 size larger clamp and ran the hose a bit further forward to keep it away from the exhaust. Blows my mind they haven’t done something about this yet

So has anyone had the hose clog up yet for whatever reason? It would seem a valid concern, and its been almost two years since some of you did this mod.

 

I’ve not had an issue yet, I even pulled mine off recently to check, all is ok.

 

I've not read thru this entire thread but I like your approach here. Can you share details on the parts used? Looks like much lighter clear tubing and a push on connector. Had to be cheaper too.
