Rust on Frame with A/C drain mod fix

Hey Folks!

Side note when you go to do this. It’s very close to the heat shield for the exhaust and the exhaust itself. There’s an aluminum bracket with a hole in it perfect for a zip tie. You probably already noticed this, but if not, it may help.

Instead of rerouting the AC drain line, wouldn’t it be easier to just apply Fluid Film to the area of the frame that it drips on? Or am I missing something.

I always wonder, when I see threads about this: Don't people think their frame gets wet when they drive in the rain? SMH

 

Condensation is slightly more acidic then rain water

 

If you terminate the drain in between the frame and the lower control arm you won’t need the zippys and it looks imo cleaner/less noticeable. Mines been like this for 4 years now.

 

In the months when the AC is used regularly that area will be constantly saturated with with moisture. The condensation line dripps for hours after you use the truck, It will most certainly rust out the frame in that whole area. If you ever had old vehicle that you parked on a field you'd see what just the moisture from the ground does. The Ford Crown vic and all the models based on the Ford Panther platform, had a condensation line that would drip straight on part the frame, eventually rotting it out.

It's the first thing I did to my truck. The body mount on the frame was dripping and totally wet after a 10 minute ride. It's simple and easy. I bought a 90° fitting and ran the drain hose on the outside of the frame rail and underneath the wheel well cover. At firest I had it mounted inside, but the hose was getting too hot IMHO.

 

Same, especially since mine was reframed in 2021

 

Posting so I remember to look into this over the weekend.

 

Welds are going to rust, my 2011 frame is still black it gets FF every year. if I see rust it gets blasted and repainted. Yeah about and hour and a half out of my day. OK I do cheat I have a drive on lift but that's OK too it gets a little FF also. NH is worse than ME with winter salt so it's some thing that really needs to be done yearly.

 

I went ahead and did this mod yesterday, luckily after several years of it not being done there was visually no rust, truck originally from Montana so maybe the a/c didn’t get used much.

my concern and why I’m writing this though is after looking this whole post and reading some of it it made me concerned that the original drain is pulled out to far. I pulled it out until it stopped from the fire wall, is that alright? I pulled it out as far as it would go with little resistance and then put a plastic 90 coming out of it and down to a 5/8 inch hose and through the frame to the cross bar member. Hopefully I didn’t screw something up by pulling on it when installing the 90. Thanks as always.

 

The drain hose is easily accessible on the floorboard. If it's pulled out to far and it's pinched, just pull back in a little bit.

 

What size tubing did you use again?

 

How do I access it from the cab to do so ?

 

As far as I can recall, I used 5/8” ID heater hose

 

Figured it out thank you and will cut zip ties and push pull slightly.

 

Finally got this done and it fit right in the cat shield
