bought this truck 6 months ago with only 25,000 miles, I knew there was some surface rust underneath. So I put er up on blocks yesterday and really started looking underneath (should of done it earlier), but being only a few years old and never having bought a newish car before, I thought I had the luxury of not worrying about it. Now Im worried. That seems like a lot of rust for a 2011??? I was prepared to do a little touch up but didnt expect this!!?? Im beginning to wonder if I bought a rust bucket. Does this look like normal rust to all you folks?

Doesn't look horrible to me, but reason to be concerned. Based on history, everyone with a set of Tacoma keys in their pocket has reason to be concerned.

Road salt. I've got friends in Canada and the NE USA that have their truck oiled on the underside every year before winter to prevent that sort of rust. One thing I can say good about living in the southwest, rust is hard to come by down here.

ya i think the previous owner must of parked it on a boat ramp..lol. got an appointment with the dealer today, we'll see what they say. I imagine I'll get the run around. I'm gonna deal with it one way or another cause i love the truck and want it to last. One big work session with some pour 15 and and a serious undercoating program is what's in store for me I think, that is unless the dealer does something for me? Seems ridiculous to be having to do this with the money I dropped on it. My 72 econoline looks better underneath.

looks solid other then surface rust. let dealer inspect, but dont let them use their shitty under coating. all that does is hide the rust until its too late to fix.

This looks like a good candidate for some frame cleaning and Fluid Film. Thats some serious rust. I would take care of it real soon.

the dealer said he'd undercoat it with the frame recall stuff (clean, rust inhibitor, and undercoat) for free. He Agreed it was a bit much and there would be an issue over time if not dealt with. I am more partial to por 15 and fluid film, but would then have to do it myself. any thoughts on the 'toyota' undercoating?

DO NOT let Toyota put their 'frame spray' on your truck, you will be sorry.
Your best bet is to clean it yourself and treat it with the product you feel comfortable with.

BTW, the 3rd pic where it looks wet is where you need to be concerned. Try to get a picture or shine a flashlight in there- willing to bet what you see will make you sick...

Edit- go further toward the front of the truck in the boxed section and look.

Remove most of the rust yourself and then have them put the undercoat on. The problem with the dealership is often they don't prep the rust well and just spray over it.

I scrubbed and repainted my frame of my '07 (Alberta truck) last October with a product called Rust Bullet. Here is a link to my thread with pictures of before and after my own repair.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/289178-07-frame-rust-pics-what-best-way-fix.html

Last month I got Krown applied. Here is a short video that explains the process. Krown is similar to Fluid Film and should accomplish the same. Fluid seems to be more popular and available in US while Krown is Canadian.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...ust-pics-what-best-way-fix-3.html#post8805075

Yesterday I received a letter from Toyota to bring it my truck for a voluntary rust inspection. I never mentioned anything at the dealer, so I'm assuming all 05-08 owners (according to the letter) are being notified. In a nutshell, they want to inspect my truck and if necessary treat it with their rust inhibitor. While not written literally, the contexts seem to suggest they would replace the frame in certain scenarios??

Has anyone else received such letter lately in western Canada? A little too late, but they also wrote they will cover any expenses of prior rust treatment, so I will try to submit my Krown receipt and Rust Bullet paint receipt and see where that gets me.

I would be interested to know what rust inhibitor product they use here. Krown, Rust Check, Fluid Film, rubberized undercoating or other?

When I was working on my rust removal project, I spent hours peeling off a rubberized undercoating applied by previous owner (possibly Toyota dealer). I bought this truck as a two year old vehicle as Toyota certified used truck. This coating was only applied on the outside of the main frame rails, so poor coverage in the first place, but what was worse, it cracked and was rusting underneath, out of sight. If this is the product they would want to use, I would strongly recommencement against it.

Edit: This is the letter I got:
