I’m so glad I didn’t pull the trigger on a sweet 97 LC with a V8 swap. On paper it’s a dream rig. Even come with triple lockers. Lived it whole life in Cleveland, so sad to see. I want to rescue it but I know my limit. I slammed the door shut and you can see rust specs rained down on the driveway.

here are some recent real pix of the 'enemy' (about six months ago) from the western fringes in the mid west Missouri River valley, which is not a cold weather state per toyota lol

pre-treatment chemicals laid down on the roads for a puny 1 or 2 inches of snow
the streets were so white crusted for the next several days until it rained and washed it into the sewers
not much i can do or have done other than power wand-hose it off routinely, most times in sub-freezing temps...

Well, where there is a will (Welder) there is a way (ability) to fix the frame and sheet metal. I'll be pulling off the bed this summer myself to seek and destroy any rust boogers I find.

I have to outsource that, it's been almost a year looking for a competent shop locally, pop of nearly 1 million
Checked 7 or 8 shops around the city, no luck yet, nobody has one iota of a clue around here :( :(

The truck ran great when I first bought it and I had no complaints, idling pretty high right now but I'm guessing it's a vaccume leak since I pulled my charcoal canister, I'll figure that out once I cant see the road through the floor though

black is the factory frame paint and white is bare steel. Repaint it before it rusts

    frame paint garbage
its rusting underneath that paint that looks good, can you not see it?
worse than a crappy pee coating!
decades of humidity with a little salt thrown in?
i swear there is something in that paint that either rusts on the top and seeps through :annoyed:

    the heck if i know!
that coating just shears right off with ease in some parts, some parts are not so easy and do not seem to have the reddish layer underneath
    :notsure: but i don't know
maybe that garbage primer has rusting properties

So the paint bubbled and there was rust under there, where you sanded down?

If it is the case, well, at least it was very mild because the steel isn't pitted or anything

either its primer or its not? idk lol
    i thought primer was blackish

its just trying to understand the art of rot
maybe just spray the naked fresh blasted part with FF and it will not rust again and respray it every year :notsure:
whats the best course of action?
i swear this truck is gonna put me in the grave before i turn 50 with this crap!

next week i am gonna get an estimate/quote to pull the fuel tank and tow it back to clean behind there then tow back to shop and reinstall fuel tank
guesstimate on the cost of that, maybe $500 in all? i have no clue how long it will take them to remove it from the bottom and put it back up there lol

Got another few questions for everyone regarding frame rust,

What are the most vulnerable areas for rust on these trucks?
Is it worth removing the bed and coating it even if the rust isn't that bad?

I've noticed much more rust under the bed than under the cab. This has made me want to take the bed off, but is the area under the cab just as vulnerable?

if your frame drain holes are plugged up (dirt or other) then yes it is vulnerable under the cab, i have seen many junkers with bad stuff with nothing but caked dirt inside when i punched through with my fingers it was so weak!
how are your drain holes looking?

The drain holes are perfect. No dirt or anything blocking them, and no rust near them.

Primer can be any color actually. "Red oxide" is a common steel primer and it's actually reddish/brown colored. Depending on the brand/manufacturer it can be brownier or redder

I guess it is what they used on the frames before dipping in the black paint and it's probably that red/brown layer you can see under the paint in your picture.

since it's bare unrusted steel, I would repaint the area with POR15 or something similar, then apply Fluid Film

do you know why the primer seems to not be holding up well in areas?

is it salty water sitting on and seeping through the paint coating making it de-laminate?

maybe its extreme humidity? do the other areas of North America that see extreme humidity (but no salt agents) have this same issue with peeling and non-effective primer leading to loss of surface adhesion
    :notsure:
