2003, Reg Cab, 4x4, original owner, did the re-call undercoating.

Today the right rear shock mount broke off the frame leaving a big hole. I was just under it a week ago scraping rust and spraying. This looks pretty bad.

Tomorrow I hope to get a better look and some pics of the damage. I honestly thought the recall undercoating was useless.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Damn, well I know it's not that hard to weild a new mount on but that's crazy probably time to sell the truck is the rest of the frame pretty rusty before you did the under coat?

Good question what does the rest of the frame look like??

You might need more work then just the shock mount fixed.

Fixing the shock mount it just a matter of repairing the damage to the frame and welding on a new shock mount.

I have done a few of these over the years

Be glad it's all documented. I'm with the 'time for a new frame on Toyota's dime' crowd.

Start figuring out what else needs replacement while they have it apart. Like shocks that look like that one. It's not going to be 'free' for you, but at least it can be labor free.

When done, start using fluid film a couple times a year.

Yes I did do the Recall Frame Inspection, I feel they just sprayed on that goo and that was it. I found my Invoice for the work, oddly not dated.

Just 2 weeks ago I went under the truck with a wire brush and removed a bunch of loose rust, sprayed with undercoat and I never saw this problem with the shock. Today I want to take better photos, I also read to take a hammer and tap the frame, maybe it will give me a better idea of the damage.
I'm also wondering how I should approach Toyota. Should I get in touch with Toyota.com before the dealership? And do I have to bring it back to where I bought it (I don't like that dealership, Ernie Both Jr). As another Dealership opened much close to me.

Thanks for chiming in, I realize this is a common topic, but always best to find the latest info.

I would just make an appointment with the dealer and take it in. It should definitely fail a frame inspection, the only question is whether they would want to give you a loaner vehicle. Sometimes people continue driving their truck after, sometimes the truck is deemed unsafe to drive. I'd push for a loaner vehicle, especially if it's going to be a while before they get a new frame under it. My father in law just got his 2004 back with a new frame and it took them about 6 months or so. He was like 42nd on the wait list when he took it in.

You'll be getting a new frame. Agreed to finding a dealer who's done a couple replacements. Also insist your loaner is a truck or you'll be getting a corolla or something.

I pulled the shock off today for a better view. Look about the same as last photos.
I tapped around with a hammer and no new holes, but certainly not looking healthy. I have a 69 VW Bus in the driveway that has a frame that looks new compared to this.
Does anyone think I should contact the Company first? I like the idea of calling the dealers to see if they done the frame swap before. mass pete let me know what happened at the Dealer, can I assume you are in Massachusetts?
    Thanks
    Did a short video.

I called a Local Toyota Dealer this morning and he took my VIN but seemed to be having trouble contacting Toyotas via their website. He also muttered that the Campaign was over. I told him I thought otherwise and now am awaiting his return call and it's been a few hours.

I heard back from the Dealer, they will inspect it tomorrow (wed). I asked if he had frames in stock. He said it may take 45 days to six months to get one! I hope it's not that long. The dealership has loaner Corolla's. I guess you just got to go into it with fingers crossed.
