Sounds like a load of shit. Specialty formula it's probably just a wash and wax. Just read up on detailing and paint protection/waxing.

Salt is water soluble, any wash will take care of it. You don't need a special chemical to remove it.

I use Salt Away (http://www.saltawayproducts.com/) on my boat, which is kept in brackish water (mid-Chesapeake bay). It's about $40/gallon, but that gets diluted quite a bit. I spray it on the boat using a cheap garden sprayer and then rinse it off. You don't need to rinse it, but it will dry streaky if you don't. Does it work? Absolutely. I didn't realize frame rust was still such a concern with the 3Rd gen, crawling around under mine to run the tallgate lock harness everything seemed painted. First Tacoma, but long time truck owner (all Chevys), never had frame issues. What am I missing? Thinking I may need to get my sprayer out of the dockbox and bring it home for the winter.

I've used Salt Away for years, and I believe it works. There is a compound in Salt away (and probably Saltsgone) that strips the chlorine off of the parts being cleaned and replaces it with some more stable compounding element.

does the Salt Away product leave any noticeable 'streaks' on the paint if you do not rinse it off before it dries with a normal spot-free rinse?

Can't say that I have noticed any streaks. Although I probably haven't let it dry on the paint. I don't use it on the painted outer-body. I use it on the under-side mostly. but I do squirt it down inside the doors past the window seals.

salts gone looks like it worked well on the bumper
passenger side is just a spot-free rinse at the wand wash
driver side is salts gone spray + spot-free rinse and nothing else

apparently 'any wash' will not take care of it, at least not on my black paint!
the same results i have gotten for over 2 decades, without employing the wash mit/sponge and some soapy car wash concentrate 'N elbow wrist workout

salt may be water soluble but there is still some NASTY left behind after just a simple rinse

I don't have experience with SaltGone but Salt Away isn't the best cleaner for dirt either.

so the haze that is left with nothing but a rinse is just the dirt from the road spray slop :notsure:
i have always gotten the haze with first using the soapy wand, rinse, spot-free rinse routine
my truck was relatively clean before this wheeling adventure out into the neighborhood yesterday and today picked it up real bad on the city streets

how do you clean your exterior paint? no sloppy taco!
for decades the only way to get my truck back to black is to hand sponge in freezing temps, the spot free and soapy wand just has never cut it :(

word of note, the salts gone is not best stored outside when its 0 degrees F for many days
it was frozen sitting out in the garage in the 2 gallon plastic gas container (undiluted) i used to have a transportable supply, 5 gallon pail was heavy lol

During the winter, if it's above freezing, and I know the truck isn't going to freeze overnight in my attached garage, I'll stop at the "wand car wash" (where you spray the vehicle yourself) down the block. I'll rinse off the outside, and spray the underside without putting too much direct pressure on the FF. I don't use any soap, brush, or sponge, just water, and I'll finish with the spot free rinse setting, if it's available, and there is time felt on my eight quarters. I won't hose off, (or let my wife wash her car), any of my vehicles if it's going to freeze with the water still in the nooks and crannies. The most I have ever sprayed off a vehicle during the winter is maybe, four times. No, the truck won't be pristinely clean.

I only use Salt Away once a year, in the spring, on the underside of my truck and some of the inner pan. Currently I'm using Meguir's Gold Class soap on the painted panels. But, I'll only do this if the truck has at least a day to sit in the sun to dry, so that I can touch up the FF after that.

Now, I always put a fresh coat of good wax on my vehicles in the fall. I've used Nu-Finish for years, but there are several good ones out there.
I also touch up the FF in the fall, but I don't put it on too thick.
My wife and kids say that I'm anal retentive LOL, but I guess I'm not quite as anal as you are, (no disrespect meant), but my truck isn't black either.

Just an update: I'm still using Salt Away and still happy with the results. I plan on using my relatively new borescope to take some pictures of the insides of the frame cavities and door cavities. I'll try to remember to post some if the photos here.
