Maui county. I've never seen a snow plow or a spreader. No snow blowers either. Sometimes at full moon high tide we get salt watah on da road.

California uses Cinder mostly but recently started using salt brine in the Eastern Sierras including areas such as the mtn passes

    Salt.
    Lots and lots of salt.
    Sand? What is that? o_O

We have a serious blood pressure (metal rot) condition here as a result.

What is the point of sand? The salt helps melt the snow. Seems like sand does nothing.

Sand is supposed to help with traction. Puts a little grip, kinda like sandpaper between the tire and the ice. Does it help? Probably not in small spread amounts but it gives the state something to spend money on.

That doesn’t compute for me. I would think driving on sand would be like driving on marbles.

SW PA. Salt and stone(anti skid).

So that way your truck get blasted with tiny pebbles before being penetrated with salt.

    Great on windshields too!

I live on a dirt/gravel road. Local twp uses just alittle ashes for traction.

But PennDot puts the shit down like never before. The last 3 years they must of had lawsuits or something cause its really heavy.

If it spreads out evenly it can help sometimes. But the problem comes when the stupid truck isn't moving(say a stop light) and drops a pile of it in one spot. And then there's Spring time when we're left with a bunch sand dust left over which can definitely get slick when it starts to accumulate together

Wisconsin here, some counties use brine on busy roads. Local crews mix a little salt into sand to keep it from clumping. Only gets spread on hills, corners and intersections. Agreed it needs to be swept off in the spring or it's deadly for motorcycles and bikes.
Along with adding traction, the dark sand helps the sun melt the packed snow and ice.
Strange cycle, we get ours from Mississippi river dredging. We spread it on the road, it washes into the creeks then the river, they dredge it up so we can spread it on the roads.

    Both in Ohio.

I always wondered why on bridges/overpasses a heated system wasn’t installed when the structure was built.

You could set it up remotely so they could be turned on/off from a single control room.

That would make sure the most susceptible areas were always snow/ice free. Then just dump sand or cinders on every other area.

It's doable if power is near. Expensive. To install to power and to maintain.

    Poll is useless without location.

In WA State never seen them use straight rock salt. Lots of dark sand. And alien slime. I am unsure of the composition of this gel that hangs off rocker panels and such.
