Everyone’s amazed you tasted white crust, and all I can think about is the fact that you take your shoes off to get in an ORV to protect the $50 carpet mats! Do you wipe your foot sweat off the pedals on a weekly basis?

Can you show them this thread? And can you film their reaction?

Also, has your wife read this yet?

There's another thread around here showing that area under the door trim plastic with significant rust on the 3rd gens. Fixed under warranty.

Can't remember who posted it... it was a regular contributor, if I recall correctly. Maybe he'll see this thread due to the unprecedented direction the trouble-shooting seemed to take.

only thing i can think of is it's coming through the rubber drain plug. kind of looks like you're missing one in the first picture, the giant circle to the left is that where the rubber plug goes?

Yeah, this may be related to that too. I think the water is getting up the rocker panel drains and under the welds.

I thought that at first, but I looked, no missing plugs. Also its in 2 separate areas with no salt trail between the two.

Just a little update on this.

Took the truck in today to get the TSS done.
Had them take a look at it, they said it was coming in through the grommet that my cb wires are going through. I said I was skeptical, but ok. Went home and pulled that grommet out, nothing, perfectly clean. So I called and let them know its not coming in through there, and that I will pull the carpet this weekend and find where its coming in myself and give them pictures.

While I was under the truck I did check some of the other grommets... I have surface rust on the rocker panel grommet areas already... its bubbling up the paint there. I only have 6k miles and I already have rust bubbles in the body.

You mean you’re not supposed to demand a new truck due to a defect of a mass produced product.

    Did he do it?

I was going to say get an ohm meter out, put a few drops of water on the ‘salt’ and see what the resistance is. If it’s salt, it will be very low.

Then sprinkle some on a candle flame - if its yellow, definately sodium based salt.

If so, he’s probably getting road deicing salt in the truck with wet boots or from the under body.

Edit: DANG!! I missed it!! I’m always late for the good one’s, I’m always eating the last crumbs of chips and the leftover guac’s all crusty. :pout:

ACF-50, Corrosion free 3000, Fluid Film . Research those. Pick one or two, Get a compressor and a underbody spray gun and spend an hour doing it yourself.

I use ACF-50 EVERYWHERE (including engine bay) and Fluid film on top of ACF-50 in high water splash areas.
Don't get it on brake rotors or inside your drums.

My truck is a '17 and been through two winters and it turns white from all the salt they spread around hear.
No rust, even on unpainted surfaces, and all the exposed steel surfaces that had a layer of rust even off the dealer's lot, ACF-50 neutralized it and it's a brownish black now. Safe on rubber and electronics. It's used in the aircraft industry.

I just ordered a bunch of fluid film to do the inside of the rockers with, I already have a giant compressor and once the temp outside gets about 60 I will be stripping the inside of the truck and spraying lizard skin on the whole floor pan.

Im thinking that any solution that the dealer has for this will not be as good as me fluid filming the whole underside, and lizard skinning the whole inside.

So, I really just want this documented for future rust claims.

More updates. I pulled the seat this morning, removed some trim and pushed the carpet all the way up. Took it back into the dealer to get my work order corrected.

Now, they cant alter yesterdays work order that says that its due to aftermarket wires, but I did get to type up a new work order that says the previous diagnosis was incorrect.

What does irk me a bit is that without any real diagnosis they branded my truck for water intrusion in the floor pan as being from aftermarket wiring. If I have any future claims of water intrusion, rust, or wiring issues due to salt water, they can be denied by warranty because they didnt diagnose the issue very well and just jumped to conclusions.

The shop foreman should be giving me a call in a few days. He took more pictures of the salt and will be submitting them to toyota.

I also ordered a bunch of thermal acoustic paint and a new hopper gun (my old one is from 2002 and way too clogged up). So once I hear from toyota, it will be clean up the mess, neutralize the salt, vacuum it all up and and seal the floor pan with the thermal acoustic paint.

It is hard to do from their side, I may call toyota corporate and see if they are able to remove the record.

I spent 6 years as a warranty admin at a VW dealer. Once a work order was closed, it was sealed. Nothing you could do to change it after its been closed.

One thing I always did though as a warranty admin with vw was to verify multiple times when blaming something on a modification or customer caused.

Its like going to the doc with liver pain, doctor says your a alcoholic because he once saw you drink a single beer, without actually checking your liver. Then 10 years down the road you come in with liver failure only to have health insurance deny your claim because a doctor didnt diagnose you at all when you first came in. If they would of checked your liver when you first came in, you wouldnt be back with liver failure 10 years later, they would of fixed it before it caused a problem.
