I helped a buddy swap out a diff in a Toyota previa van it was a PITA! Getting the shafts out was the hardest part.

Most shops aren't going to have the parts in stock, need the gears specially for your truck plus install kit. I've had good luck with Progear in San Diego. It's normally at least $200 just for the labor, and that's if you bring the 3rd member to them. If you bring the whole truck, I'd say your looking at double that JUST for labor

@sladesdaddy1022 you swapping gears or 3rd member? 2 are completely different animals.

The whole 3rd is pretty easy stuff if you don't mind crawling under the truck. He installed a LT kit at home. Check out the write up link I posted up. Only difference I'd add is pull the axle shafts all the way out so you don't damage the seals.

So that being said 3rd member is a little easier to install but what about adding a locker? Do it now or wait till truly needed? Is it a pita to do it later down the road?

I would double check to see if the 2x4 Tacoma has the same diff as your prerunner sport.

Also check the axle spine. I'm sure his truck is a five lug.

It should be a direct swap. The 2nd gen 5lug diff is the 8.4"
