I figure I will buy better parts as I break, within limits. If I am driving my normal way and break something every time I go then I will definitely upgrade axles. But of I go through a couple stock axle shafts a year then I will use up the ones I can find cheap and easy then upgrade. First I will use good joints on the stock stuff and see how it goes.

This site isn't near as bad as pirate. I won't even post this stuff on pirate I would be ridiculed forever, all those guys must be rich over there the way they talk.

Funny thing is I used to wheel a Ford Ranger with 36 inch tires, mostly in the snow in washington. Welded front and lunchboxed rear. I had a ton of fun with that truck, broke a few front axles, never had a problem with the rear though. I miss the snow, 2 lbs of air and you come home clean most of the time.

Guess we will see, there are people out there who break 5 ton Rockwells.

LOL, PBB is not bad, but it isn't for everyone.

I have been on there since 2011 and have a total of 9 posts. I don't go there to BS, I go to read, research and learn shit from people who know wtf they're talking about. You might say, "how will I know who is full of shit and who is knowledgeable?" It will be immediately apparent, as there will be no cross-insults thrown in the way of the really experienced guys. There may even be a little ass-kissing tossed their way from their cheering section... If they offer up advice, fuckin listen. I am not sure how much of the old guard is left, many of them left and went to irate4x4.com

The main thing to remember is, people there are very critical, especially when it comes to safety. This is a good thing if you can deal with the guys looking for a quick laugh at your expense then most of the dudes there are all about pointing out the flaws in your design while also making fun of you. Which I see as a good thing. They are not making fun of you as a person, you're just another anonymous booty-fabber showcasing their stick art in a room of Rembrandts. If you can parse the jokes without getting defensive, those dudes will go to the end of the earth to ensure you are making something safe and well built.

If you are looking for people to praise you for your ingenuity, come here or go on instagram.
If you are looking for people to give you kid glove tips and tech, TTORA is your place.
If you are looking for people who are brutally honest, hilarious, and have not just assembled, but fabricated, their own shit on a professional level... you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere on the internet better than Pirate.

But you'd never have to post over there because, if you're thinking about doing it, 99% of the time someone else has asked or tried it. Additionally, no one in the thread I linked below was a dick about the question. It's not a constant flame war there. Some threads get heated, but it's because people post pictures of their ghetto fabbed shit, get feedback, then just say, "You guys are just being assholes." IMHO, that's them being idiots, not the board being assholes.

PBB/IBB mostly are a bunch of idiots and that place is nothing compared to how it was when I first joined back in 2003. 99% of them are posers who just repeat what they heard and havent actually done anything. Ask your question and tell anyone who gives you crap to drink bleach and F a blender. I will say dont ask stupid questions like how to change a water pump or something like that.

That turned out great :headbang:. How do you like it now compared to leaf springs? Do you think the juice was worth the squeeze? lol

Only if you add the numbers for the expenses

Worlds ahead. More so having 6.5 inches of uptravel vs two. Less axle wrap as well now which helps as well.

Yeah I only get axle wrap in the rear now but planning to do an anti wrap bar here soon to help with that. With 6.5 now I can go as fast as I want and not get the crap beat out of me which is nice and still flexes really well while being super stable.

    Awesome!

What you described really settles the "leafs vs links/coilovers" type of arguments.

Yes...leaf springs work, are cheaper, etc. But links/coilovers are soooooooooooo much better in so many ways.

There’s always trade offs. A little taller for more uptravel on leaf springs and some decent bump stops and I probably wouldn’t have thought I needed to link it.

But for the wheeling I do (lots of sand stone, sand hollow, moab etc) with lots of off camber and steep climbs I like a lower overall height.

37s and 24 in frame height with a 125 in wheelbase i bellied out a lot. Now 39s with 23.5 in frame height and a 128 or 130 wheeelbase and I rarely touch the belly. All a trade off in the end.

I also think leaf spring tech has progressed a lot from when I originally did mine and a set of deavers up front or sky’s new 3f springs would also have been worlds ahead for ride quality vs my trail gear plus junkyard springs pack.

sounds dumb but main reason I did all this work was because the springs were worn and needed replace and I wanted more uptravel to go fast lol. The truck worked super good before and there was very few obstacles in the south west I couldn’t do and I out wheeled a lot of very well built jeeps.

That escalated quickly from worn leaf springs that needed replacements to a 3-link and coilovers haha.

I'm at 26.5" frame height on a 104" wheelbase  (reg cab truck on 40"s). Pretty tall by y'all standards lol.

I have TG 5" leaf springs in the rear axle. They have worked pretty good for the most, tons of flex and good highway manners (I don't have a trailer). However, I know that having leaf springs in a steering axle with leafs also in the rea is a whole different story. I would probably hate them in the front.

Your project turned out really good. Glad to hear is performing well and that you like it.
