A SAS is a massive time/money undertaking no matter you slice it. It's funny to see how many people in various online groups always downplay things when talking about their custom projects whether those are offroad rigs, racing, motorcycles, etc. Few are honest enough to share the reality of it.

Once again, great build! That's my favorite 4runner body style. It really looks bad ass. Curious, why did you go with full hydraulic steering? Are those 40" tires? I have hydro assist with 40"s and it seems like plenty, but did consider full hydraulic to future proof things in case I ever go with bigger tires :D

Look like 37? Full hydro have no road manner and I wouldn't recommend going that route if you still plan to DD.

When folks say they can SAS a Tacoma for $5k, I said ooooookay. Seemed like I took out a second mortgage to partially finish mine

Thank you. I did already have a full hydraulic kit and will be trailered 90% of the time. But wish now it was little more street friendly. The tires are 39x13.50r17 KM3.

I think I got everything, what else am I missing?

    4wheelunderground complete 3 link w/ CO - $5.5k
FROR complete front axle - $6k
Dual case and drivelines - $3.5k
    Wheels and tires - $4k
Hydro and steering components - $2.8k
Rear suspension components and gears w/ locker - $2.5k
Front bumper, rear bumper, and slider - $2k

 I think my guesstimate is pretty close :D

I don't DD anymore, but still drive it on the street. So I have to keep that in mind. Hydro assist works well and am happy with it. I just always wondered if I "should" have done something different.

The second mortgage analogy seems accurate LOL!

Makes sense since you had the parts and won't be driving on the street for the most. It looks like you could fit bigger tires in there easily. You definitely have the steering for it

Wow I didn't realize those 4WU kits were that much $$$.

Covid inflation probably play a big roll in pricing. Buy the brackets and source everything else will be cheaper, sometimes. That depends on what you want and what you end up buying. That's what I did, I want Fox Factory 2.5 over Radflo, already have DOM tubing from other projects laying around among other things. I'm a cheap bastard :D

I always assume they're talking about a 3rd gen pickup because you can pickup a Yota axle or chevy 44 and slap some leafs under there for a lot less work than a Tacoma requires

Nothing wrong with piecemealing everything together lol. I did something similar haha.

I just don't understand why some metal brackets and Heims should cost that much money. A full 3-link kit from From Barnes 4WD and Ruffstuff cost under a grand. Artec and Ballistic are a bit more but still reachable for most budgets.

Now, coilovers, yea, that can make a big dent depending on one's preferences. And it is true that DOM prices are very high. But it doesn't take that much DOM for a 3-link anyway.

I guess it all points to how inflation has made everything insane these days...

Also, people get things mixed up when talking about finished projects vs just the suspension work. This throws things off when people post about project costs online.

Tons, links front and rear, stickies, beadlocks… its a fucking snowball for sure. Now I’m in the the middle of a 2rz turbo swap. I should have built a buggy lol.

I remember following your build. It has gone through a lot of transformations! One of my favorites for sure. In its current stage is definitely not a good example to prove that the older trucks are cheaper to build lol

True on that. I love working on this rig though. 12 years of sinking money into an endless money pit. That being said, when I initially built the toy axles I had about 2500 in them with no suspension and steering mods. That was replacing every serviceable part on each axle with OEM parts, 5.29s, detroits front and rear, longs, and an IFS rear width axle. It adds up quick.

Im at about $10,039.54 in the front end just to get it rolling, not including wheels/tires. That price is still climbing as I am still adding hydraulic assist etc. I would guess Ill be around the 15K mark when the fronts done(not including wheels/tires).

These prices are NOT including labor.

Custom axle is that why? I'm trying to wrap my mind of $10k for custom housing or 1t.
