But a raptor would still technically be considered a mid travel truck and the Tacoma will have more travel once build up, throw in a supercharger and the Tacoma would be much faster than the Raptor. But by then you would be over the price of the Ford.

Btw, I just voted for the "Are you on crack" option because I could have bought several Raptors for what I've sunk into my Tacoma. No desire to start over at this point.

i wouldn't consider it a mid travel truck... it's upper and lower arms are (i think) 2" over from stock... therefore, "long" arms

the rear susp... yeah, it is kinda mid travel-ish cause it's spring over and the shocks are mounted under the bed. i'd mess w/ the rear susp before i did anything with the front. air bumps on all 4 corners would be a must for me though...

There's dealer markup in the raptor. It's like buying a lift from the dealer for the FJ. They'll charge you about $9K. The aftermarket cost is much lower or comparable but you'll get a much better setup. Plus, base price for a Prerunner wouldn't be $30K (you can get 4x4 TRDs for that price). It'd be closer to $23K (msrp). You'd have almost $20K to put into the truck before you get to the Raptor's list price. That is a lot of modding.

Yea, I guess you are right. :D

I think the Raptor is cool, but if you are going to be using it hard offroad things will break, and will those parts really be covered under warranty? That's what I'm not sure of.

Would you consider the Raptor race ready?

but the raptor is 4WD, so you have to compare it to a 4WD tacoma

and if we are talking about building up a tacoma to match the raptors susp, front and rear. that $20K will go very, very quick.

I got a ride in a well sorted long travel (2nd gen) Tacoma outside Reno this summer. Total Chaos front with Fox remoter res and DMZ (I think) spring under in the rear with a bed cage.... Set up the same as most of the go fast guys here on the Forum.

While going thru the whoops with the Taco just starting to move around enuf for the driver to get nervous we got passed by a 6.2 Raptor (still had paper plates on it) like we were parked. The Raptor driver had a Diet Pepsi in his hand when he went by....

Now I'm no desert truck expert but the Taco probably had $15K minimum in suspension and glass and it was a newish (8K on the ODO) 2009 Access Cab, 4.0, auto trans. I'd call it a $40,000 truck. Dollar for dollar (base price on a 6.2 Raptor in under $42) these trucks were close in value and the Taco got spanked.

Don't get me wrong I love my Toyota but before I put $10K into a $25K truck to make it as fast as a $40K truck I'd spend some serious time thinking about it.....

The rapter is a sweet truck but it's to big.

I like the short wheelbase my reg cab tacoma has, and it will fit on a tighter trail.
    {what trails are around here in sw ohio would not fit somthing that wide}

Anyone who pays dealer markup is crazy. I can't argue for them if they're stupid. :)

Now, I really don't know much about these trucks, I fully admit that. Does the Raptor have a locker? Wouldn't most guys (mjp2 comes to mind) want to start with a TRD Off-Road when doing this kind of build? Again, if that's not a consideration, then please excuse this part of my post.

From having paid for the restoration of a car and knowing what labor costs are, and having had input from 2 guys on here with LT experience, you could blow through $15k pretty quickly.

thats the raptors spot on shock valving coming into play. Fox got those shocks dialed in perfect. thats why the raptor can perform so well with it's small travel numbers. huge travel numbers dont mean anything if your shocks are not valved and tuned specificaly for the truck and application they are bolted to

If I was going to build another Tacoma, I'd start with a bare-bones model, throw out the stock stuff, and start from there. My truck will have a Ford axle in the next year or so.

Keeping the stock TRD Offroad axle housing alive has taken a fair amount of work already and the strength of the gears is still a concern for me.

The same could be said for the MSRP on the Tacoma. Just starting on equal footing.
ARB lockers. Many would argue they're better than the electronic lockers anyway.
