Since the chrome is just a coating on top of the plastic, you could probably sand the crap out of it to get down to plain plastic and then paint it black. You might be better off keeping the chrome one stock and getting a black one to mod if you plan on going that route.

could be done, but not using the gc without cutting it. the opening in the grill surround tapers in from front to back (the opening is larger at the front of the grill than the rear)

when you cut out the plastic crossbars, the gaps in the grill surround come up pretty far to the front, so you won't be able to recess the mesh grill very far back without doing some kind of patchwork. might as well just mount it flush at the front if you don't want to fill the gaps imo

This really seems like a good idea if you are going to put lights behind the grill. This should allow more airflow to get to the engine since you are blocking some with the lights. I didn't realize that those triangles were solid until this forum.

So I started this method with a grill from customgrills.com

I cut out the 'puzzle piece' if you will, from the flat portion of plastic, but it doesn't exactly fit like a glove into the gaps. I have several open areas that don't fit very tight... should I keep grinding? Maybe I'm retarded with a dremmel, but I can't seem to get it as close to Kevins! Am I okay? Will the glue fill in the gaps and the puddy mask it over? Sorry, like many here I have zero experience cutting up plastic grills.

bone stock save for the block lift that came on it with the open country m/t.
neither does mine, so I have had to improvise a little....I am sanding here and there ("the puzzle pieces") to try and make them fit as best they can. Glue the pieces in there and putty over should do it. At least that is what I am going to do, hope it works, will let you know. :)

The object of the game is to get that piece to fit as closely as possible. You aren't going to fill every gap, most likely. The epoxy will fill the gaps and harden, and then you'll have to sand the area down and use the body filler to get everything flush.

Don't stress it, it's certainly not an exact science. The real art comes in sanding everything down and getting to a smooth surface. Paint will cover any epoxy and bondo spots remaining.

i spent a couple of hours fitting those pieces in the gaps, trimming them, and re-fitting them until i was happy with the fit. just get it as close as you can with the time and patience you have. doesn't have to be perfect because the epoxy will fill in the gaps to some degree when you bond the piece into the grill surround. good luck!

    Not at all...

It'll fit up front. If you want it in back, you have a lot of cutting, sanding, bondo work, and painting ahead of you.
