At my 5K service, I had the dealership change the oil, instead of waiting until 10K for that first oil change. All the other stuff, mostly inspections and the tire rotation, were performed as scheduled at 5K. My thinking was to have the next gratis oil change performed at 15K.

I've got about 7600 miles on the truck now and expect I'll begin a 3500 mile road trip with about 8500 miles on the odo. By the time I'm back there should be about 12,000 miles on the odometer.

So, here's my question: Should I schedule that 10K service before I leave on my trip, or after I return, when the only meaningful service to be provided is a tire rotation? Is there any compelling reason to do it before or after? I can't see any reason either way, but I've been known to overlook the obvious.

Rotate your own tires and be on your way.
No reason to go to the dealer unless you got a couple hours with nothing better to do.

Too old, or too lazy, or maybe both. Especially when I know someone will do it for free.

Can't recall what else is in that 10K service, but suspect it's just a bunch of inspect this, inspect that.

I'd do it after. 2K is not a big deal.

Ok, the little extra mileage on the tire without rotation will be ok as long as your alignment is good. Enjoy the trip!

Ok, I'm probably full of shit, but I thought I read that all the service interval maintenance ( 5k, 10k, etc) had to be done within 1000 miles of the interval.

Maybe, but your dealer has a lot of discretion. I'd probably check with them to confirm before going. Why risk any advice here on TW?

Op can always stop along his trip and do it... out of town or out of state dealer may take into consideration that he is traveling and get him in and out quickly.

Ya, some dealers have that "Drive in-Drive-out" servicing lane, similar to those at oil change places. Good call.

My dealer told me that the 10K complementary service can be done anytime before or after 10K. However, the 25K final comp service must occur before the odo turns 25K.

It's only the "Sunshine Service" anyways.... They open the hood and let the sun shine in.... !! That's it.... they "may" inspect the fluid levels if they can see them while holding the hood up, but they likely will NOT top them up if low...!! (too hard to do while holding the hood up).. hehe...
You changed oil early at 5,000.... You are good till 15,000.... No sweat man..!!

Rotate tires...?? Do you do winter tires..?? If so it's time to throw them on... get the dealer to put them on for free..!!

"Sunshine service" -- I like that. No winter tires. In my last truck (2007 SR5 DCLB), I ran studded snow tires in the winter. But the TPMS req't has made this such a headache that I've given up on running 2 sets of wheels / tires. Other than my 2 weeks to North Dakota in November and a handful of trips to eastern WA and OR to hunt birds, I don't do much driving in really nasty conditions.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Case closed.
