How do you know it affects the airbag system? Sounds to me like you pulled that out of your ass.

I figured he smartass part. Every time a seat belt chime disable thread is started the smartasses come out. Seems like most of them are from CA. Yes I know that I can simply fasten the seat belt behind me but after days on the ranch I will invariably forget to unfasten it at the last gate on the way out. Sometimes I will just say the heck with it and drive on to the first stop on the county road. Dealers seem to be all over the board on this issue. Some will listen to reason and disable because the manual lists it as a customizable feature and others give you the safety crap. I did the self disable on my 2009 and not once did I need it to remind to wear my seat belt on a public road. I know the importance after tboning a Ford Tauras that ran a stop sign. This was just after the seat belt law went it effect and I was glad it did.

You might want to reread my statement to see that I qualified it with the word that expresses possibility but not certainty. My understanding of modern airbag systems is that they take into account both the weight in the seat and whether the belt is hooked or not. I choose not to risk reducing such an important safety system's effectiveness. Of course, you're free to do whatever you want.

These threads always end up being pi$$ing contests between those that apparently are content to have the government decide what is best for them and those that believe they are capable of making those decisions for themselves. I wear my seat belt, I don't need a reminder to tell me so. I understand the consequences of my actions and take full responsibility for them if I choose not wear my seat belt in certain circumstances. The arguments for and against disabling seat belt warning chimes are moot if you are an adult capable of making an informed decision regarding your own personal safety. If you need an annoying reminder, fine. If you want the reminder disabled, fine. There is no need to rationalize either decision.

me too. If the dealer had just disabled mine like I asked them too I would not even look at these threads. Toyota has chosen to make this a custom feature and some dealers are playing god. I went through Toyota CS and they said no problem with disabling. Next thing I know they are siding with the dealer.

There is a Blue tooth module you buy that connects to the OBD2 port. Then you use some software, its free and you flash some code and it disables it. I did it to my 13 years ago. It is a must do for anyone who off roads, who likes to 4 wheel and deal with buckling and un buckling all day? Ill see if I can dig up the instructable for it.

Edit: Found the thread for it
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/disable-seat-belt-alarm-2013-factory-method-diy.256322/

Just follow that, if you order the obd2 plug you can use that with torq apps and such as well

I always wear a seatbelt but couldn't care less what other people do. That said, has anyone been asked by a dealer to sign a waiver when having the chime disconnected? Wouldn't surprise me....

Dealer said "no, it's a legal thing" then whispered "tacomaworld" in my ear.

Funny thing, I wasn't saying let Big Brother decide for you. I was (in my post about the possibility of the mod affecting the airbag system) saying that be aware of a "fix" that could cause additional, undesirable issues. The dummy clips seem like the way to go without the possible side-effects.

My dealer said they would just lower the volume, but not turn it completely off. Then added it would be $65.

I hunt and drive private dirt roads. I carry heavy stuff in the bed of the truck. If I leave the seatbelt un hooked...the chime goes away in seconds. not a biggie to me.

would that contest be based on how many times?...duration?...or distance?...

'cause I'm an old guy and would want to know such things prior to entering such a contest. :D:laugh:

    Google is your friend, Mikeyboy:

    http://www.caranddriver.com/features/the-physics-of-airbags-feature

    Money quote:

"Advanced airbags are multistage devices capable of adjusting inflation speed and pressure according to the size of the occupant requiring protection. Those determinations are made from information provided by seat-position and occupant-mass sensors. The SDM also knows whether a belt or child restraint is in use."
