So my pump stuck open this morning and the check engine light came on and the truck went into limp mode.

Took it to dealer and the quoted approx $1800k to repair

Truck is a 2012 Tacoma with 56,863 miles.

They asked if I had an extended warranty I told them I do not and it does not matter its covered by emissions warranty.

Service manager said he already asked regional service manager for good will and was denied I told him I am not asking for good will I do not need it since it is covered by the warranty eh?

Eventually after much debate and battling this morning corporate was called and it will be covered under warranty! They wanted my extended warranty to pay for it but I do not buy those and they wanted me to pay for it but no way was that going to happen.

If I had to delete this emissions system part, because no way in hell I was paying that, it would have been the last Toyota I ever owned. Fucking ridiculous on a truck with this low miles. Searches indicate the Tundra guys have a lot of issues with this pump and its related parts and Hewitt makes a deletion kit but I am unsure if one is available for my truck year and model.

also, we've all been hit about the same timeframe. Early 2012 tacos with 50-80k miles it usually takes a shit. Toyota extended the warranty for the 2nd gen tundras but did nothing for our 2nd gen tacos. Kind of bs.

Nah not SOL... Several options exist:
    • fight for warranty coverage
    • delete the system
    • bypass the system wit
    • fool the system
    • clean the pump out with carb cleaner
    • there might also be a GM part that only costs less than a $100 and can be swapped in with a wiring harness change

I am aware, my solution was $140 shipped to my door and 2 hours of my time. Works great.

I'm a tundra guy. I made my own bypass system. $45. The Hewett system is based off my home made system.

There is a good thread on this site. This topic is discussed in detail.

Can you elaborate a little or is it in another thread already?

I applaud your persistence in holding them responsible and getting them to cover under the federal emissions warrenty.

    Well done man.

i think it's better to have more threads on this actually, it doesn't seem to affect 13+ models which makes me think the pumps that shipped on our tacos are garbage.

This is true, makes sense to have multiple threads about a major issue.

Thanks! The wife was impressed so yeah it was great. The great Patrick Swayze in Road House tells us to be nice until it is time to stop being nice and that worked great today. Just before I was about to stop being nice WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! Covered by warranty!

Also, just to clarify, they said they will cover it under powertrain warranty.

I am in Indiana and the service manager called corporate for me I did not actually call them myself. He did it reluctantly and only after much debate however. And only after he had tried for an extended warranty and some good will.

It doesn't affect 2013+ models, because they are not old or high mileage yet.

Give it time. I expect to be forced to replace mine in a couple of years.

we shall see .. maybe once they will start failing I won't have any issue taking my truck to the dealer and getting it fixed under warranty.

I just know the truck is going to do it again this morning on the cold start! I am waiting for the part to come in and driving it like this... It looks like resetting PCM can be done from the driver's position without disconnecting the battery I am going to give that a try this morning if needed.

You win the "you suck" award for the day.

In case you are not aware, this is a huge compliment.
