2012 here with 80k on the odo, same thing as you were describing.. 2 codes and limp mode. I bought the secondary air injection bypass kit that I plan to install in the truck. Kind of bullshit that Toyota knows about this POS system and they do nothing about it for our 2nd gen tacos.

It basically tricks the truck in to thinking its 40 degrees outside so the pump never turns on, thus doesn't throw any CEL codes. It also has plates to stop the flow of exhaust through the vacuum. I read the whole thread today at work and everything was pointing to that. Also that I've seen 2012s with the same issues but no other year model of our 2nd gen trucks.

So what is causing the impeller blades to break off? Is there a plug of carbon breaking loose and jamming in there while it's spinning? Is it a piece of the foam air filter? It seems some fine metal screening could be placed over the intake between the foam and the impeller inlet.

Light came back on yesterday. So, I got approximately 3 1/2 months out of cleaning it. Haven't taken it back apart yet to see what it looks like. I'm at work and frustrated that it's back on again so thought I would share. :annoyed::annoyed::annoyed:

So far I have only seen complaints of the 2012 model Tacoma's as well, I think this is because they changed things up after 2012. Tacoma's after 2012 run the pump for a few seconds after shutdown, this is to evacuate moisture that caused issues in the tundra pumps and the 2012 Tacoma pumps. Our 2012 trucks do not run the pump after shutdown.

As the Second Generation Tacomas gets older more of these pumps and valve are going to go bad. I had my truck throw out a p2445 code. Contacted Hewitt-Tech about it, he stated his kit will take care of that code . Purchased the plug and play, even though you still have to solider one wire onto the blade of the starter relay. It's a little confusing which blade on my 05 4 cylinder truck. Found out it's the widest side silver blade facing the windshield. I was having problems with twisting the wire around it to make a good connection, so I file a spot nearest to the body and solider the wire to the blade. Now another code came up! Code po418 meaning a bad AIR INJECTION PUMP, when I now ask Hewitt about this. He stated you need a working pump or for $80 MORE! I can sell you a resistor, and you need to send me your pumps connector. I went ahead and purchased a used working one, everything is good now. So for plug/play, block off plates $225, wire ties, black plastic wire conduit , a used working pump $100, and about 6 hours of my time. I've got $335 invested in it! That's pretty good for jerry rigging it! Their's a company that started to rebuild the pumps, now that these trucks are going out of warranty. Got this, from a company with a CrossRef number for my truck, I have the 05 2.7l engine. http://www.carid.com/cardone/remanufactured-secondary-air-injection-pump-mpn-33-2504m.html

All this pump does is add air to the catalytic converter when it's cold. To help fool the ECU into a leaner fuel mixture, causing the ECU to dump a richer mixture in so it'll get the catalytic converter to heat up quicker when cold. The air injection pump shuts off once the catalytic converter reaches normal operating temperature. I wonder if they have air injection pumps on the 2016 models? http://www.autosafety.org/sites/default/files/imce_staff_uploads/T-SB-0160-11.pdf

Did you purchase your truck early or late 2012? My truck is an early 2012 and does not run the pump after shutdown.

That TSB covers water intrusion, which is why I think they changed the pumps to run after shutdown. If any moisture remains in the system it causes issues. My pump failed during winter time, water froze inside the unit causing my issue. Its a crap system and hopefully Toyota will add the Tacoma's to that list and give us coverage on it. Luckily my issue happened early on when I was under warranty, but it would sure suck to get stuck somewhere with the truck in limp mode. I might install that bypass kit just so I don't have to worry about it.

Early 2012 .. it also depends on what the temp outside is ... here in Houston it's hot AF and I don't notice it when it's cold outside.

Well I guess mine doesn't work correctly still, no matter the temp the pump does not run after shutdown. My fathers 2013 and my aunts 2014 run after shutdown and its just as loud as when the pump runs on startup. So I know temp isn't a factor for me as they live in the same area I do..interesting.
