Any idea if swapping out the ECU to an earlier non-pump/valve 4.0 would work?

Save all of your paperwork and maybe they will start reimbursing everyone with this problem, like they did with the Tundra.

this same thing happened to me 2012 with 49990k miles. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA. This is crap that toyota wont cover this known fault.

BTW- has anyone rebuilt this valve assembly? Is it possible? i have the old one in a box but might want to rebuild now for when i hit 100k

    Reposting this from another thread

I am new to the forum and just received my first P2442 on a 2012 V6 TRD with 50k. I griped to everyone at the dealership and made the call to corporate (800-331-4331) who are reviewing my case and getting back to me within a couple of days. Depending on how that ends up, I am planning on replacing the Valve that is stuck open myself. Do you gents recommend that I also replace the foam filter and plastic fin in the pump while I am in there? Will that help against any future expense or pump failure?

The dealership half acknowledged the problem, claimed the stuck open valves was electrical and not covered by the emission warranty (which is bullshit) and sent me on my way.

Thanks Large, Good to know, probably the route I will go.

Heard from Corporate Toyota and they stated that if I got a diagnostic check done at the dealership, they would wave that fee if I got it repaired at the dealership, and cover 50% of the cost. I am still thinking of saving the few hundred dollars and doing it myself

Replaced my valve this morning, took about an hour and twenty minutes. Back exhaust tube bolt is a pain to get to but nothing too terrible. Truck is running good so far!

Also wanna mention that when I removed the hose going to the pump I literally poured water out of it... what size filter are people putting on the pump to help prevent this?

    Too few to list.
It could be possible but the materials have to withstand the high heat under hood temps.

That's not a bad idea but isn't some moisture coming from the exhaust too?

Probably not. Water is a byproduct (output?) of the catalytic converters, so the moisture is downstream in the exhaust, not upstream where the pump is.

Huh? Gasoline is a hydrocarbon with on average a bit over 2 hydrogen atoms per carbon atom. Combustion products are therefore about one water molecule per carbon dioxide/monoxide molecule. There is *gobs* of water vapor coming out of the exhaust valves of the cylinders.

The catalytic converter does three things. It oxidizes CO to CO2, it converts NOx to N2 and O2, and lastly combusts any partially burned hydrocarbons to CO2 and H2O. That last step is of course vanishingly small compared to the combustion happening in the engine. The cat adds barely any water vapor to the exhaust, almost all of the water vapor was made in the cylinders.

So there is in fact gobs of water vapor where the valves are.

I stand corrected. Obviously, my engineering background does not include much chemistry...

No worries! And to be clear, even if that's the correct chemistry I have no idea if the water vapor that's in the exhaust is really what causes the issue with the valves. I assume it is because the "fix" Toyota has in later models is to purge them with fresh air on shutdown which would only seem to be useful if the source of the issue was the exhaust gasses. But there is more than just water in the exhaust gases so the purge could be dealing with something other than water entirely.

Your chemistry is pretty close - I looked it up! LOL

Now I am wondering where I heard the idea about the cats and water. Thinking about it, that idea makes no sense - I should have looked into that idea long ago.

I just ran into this issue on my 2012 Tacoma (76k miles) and I may have a (temporary) fix. My truck kept throwing the P2441 code and going into limp mode. I just took the secondary air injection valve off and cleaned off a lot of the carbon build up with a dry rag. It's only been a week but so far but I haven't had any codes.

Add me to the list. 40,000 miles and my valve is stuck open. After owning many Toyota trucks over the years I'm done. Never again. Filing a complaint but I don't want to fork over any money to the dealer for a diagnosis. I'd rather throw these parts through their dealership windows.
