I got my new valves and installed them and everything is back to normal. I will buy the bypass soon before the pump ruins the new ones. I filed a complaint with NHTSA, man that was fun, I almost ran of out characters, included the TSB that Toyota made almost immediately for the Tundra/Sequoia systems. Sadly, I did not take a picture of the air pump when I first opened it to see water sitting in the pump.

What is the lowest price you guys have found on these valves and where? Toyota denied my request for a goodwill warranty. I was quoted $2800 for the repair from the dealer. Hilarious, I told them to eat shit and die

And for those that have installed the bypass do both the valves and pump need to be working for the bypass to work? I have read all 35 pages and haven't found a definitive answer. Thanks

I bought mine from Camelback Toyota(they are in the vendors section, Gary rocks!) Valves plus two gaskets were $479 with overnight shipping.

Yes, both have to be working cause they send an OK signal when engine starts, but they don't actually run.(from what I understand)

Out of curiosity could this be part of what's causing a lot of malfunctions? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I doubt it. It is rarely if ever in any US gasoline. The comment in the manual is due to MMT affecting the catalytic converter.

Well, several weeks ago, I was hit with the dreaded P2440 and P2442 codes (2012 tacoma 67k miles). What a nightmare as it took me a few weeks to solve issue and I had an almost non working vehicle the whole time. Took it to the dealership, was quoted $1700 to fix and some time to order the part. Dealership and toyota refused to cover. I didn't want to give toyota any more of my money so ordered the valves and fixed myself. I don't do a lot of work on cars and took me about 2-3 hours and cost $500 for valves and gaskets. I did lodge a complaint on the NHTSA website. Hopefully they will do something, as this is ridiculous: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owner....model=TACOMA&searchCriteria.prod_ids=1182781

Thanks for everyone's comments and insights on these pages!

Just throwing my own experience on here: I have a '12 DCSB TRD Sport (big surprise, another 2012) and this past Friday, I got P2440 and P2442. I dropped it off at Toyota, went home, and then they called to give me a quote for $1,100. I asked about any emissions or goodwill warranty/gesture they could offer, to which they said no. I told them I'll just come by to pick it up as-is and once I got there, they dropped it to $850 ($550 parts, $300 labor), so I begrudgingly accepted. I guess I was relatively pleased with $850 after reading about some of the crazy quotes you guys have been getting from your Toyota dealerships. Ugh, oh well. Have a good one!

    Too few to list.
Make sure you file a complaint with the NHTSA.

Just yesterday I had the code P2442. I live in Oregon that has adopted CA's emissions warranty.
But the service department said only the 4 cylinders were covered. And they wanted $105 to plug in the truck to the computer. I asked if that would be waived if warranty picked up the cost or if I had the work do there. Nope it was going to cost $105 at least. Well I told them I and my family had bought at least 5 New cars from them and I would not be doing that anymore.
They did not seem to care and told me to have a nice day as I was leaving. They Suck

I am just mystified by all of these bad dealership experiences? Do y'all live in smaller towns with no dealership competition? Did you try taking it to another dealership?
    - None of the dealerships charge for code reading here (Toyota or Chevy for my other car)
    - Code reading is free at most auto part stores like Auto Zone.
    - If you had purchased 5 cars from there, why did you not already have a good relationship with a service manager?
    - If you had no service manager relationship, go back to your sales person and ask them for a recommendation and for a introduction to the best service manager.
    - Go to the new dealership and tell them you were treated badly by their competitor and you are ready to bring all your business here.

    Good Luck to All.

2012 Tacoma 54k. I do live in a small town with one dealership. There is another city that is about an extra 20 miles. I called them and they said same price $105 to check the codes. But if they did the work that they would apply it towards it. Ok better.
I did clear the code today and it has not came back on yet. P2442.
I am thinking about trading it in for a new rig for my wife. Not a Toyota. I think I would feel bad passing on the problem to someone else.

I got the codes last week. They went away after a day of driving but I went ahead and ordered the parts. Codes came back this morning so I did the replacement this evening. Took about 1.5 hours. The procedure is very straight-foward if you have any mechanical experience at all.

Just make sure your extendable magnet is handy ;)

I didn't even bother with the dealership. Our local dealer is notorious for bad service.

    72k miles.

I got the codes here too. 2012 Tacoma 38K miles. My pump is good, valves stuck open. I reversed the two valve springs for now to keep valves closed. Now I get the ECL for valves closed but no limp mode. I bought a OBD2 wifi scanner and I use the IOS app dash commander to monitor and clear codes. I plan on waiting to see if Toyota gets their act together. I filed complaints with NHTSA and Toyota. Took the poll too.

So this fix didn't work, however, my truck stopped going into limp mode after throwing the code. that's a win right?

2012 DCSB OR AT 4x4, 41.5k miles, codes P2440, P2442. It's at dealer in Tustin,Ca now, getting their diagnosis to the already known problem. CEL TCL and Limp mode Thursday morning leaving work, cleared the code when I got home. Let it sit all day. Started this morning to go to work, same codes and situation. Dropped it off on break and waiting to hear back. Hoping to convince them it's should be covered under the Ca Longterm Emissions warranty 7yr 70k miles.

Already wrote an official complaint to NHTSA and filled out the Poll.

Got news back from Tustin Toyota. Parts are covered under warranty at no cost. I am in California. Bad news is it is on back order. They said it's driveable as is, even with the Limp Mode.. I should hear back Monday about the backorder eta.

Mine threw codes last weekend just under 84k. Took to dealership on Monday. Told them what it could be and that they should order the Secondary air injection valve assy. They told they couldn't due to they weren't sure if that was the prob. They inspected my pump ...everything checked out fine. They cleared the codes and sent me omw. Wednesday of this week lights back on. I didnt have time to take in so I cleared em myself. Friday lights back on on cold start. called dealership. They had it all day only to tell me they needed to order the valves that I told them to in the first place :annoyed:. Glad I paid for the extended warranty or I would be allot more pissed than I am right now.:mad::mad::frusty:
