While it's still under warranty I wouldn't worry about it. If you still own it, right before the warranty is up I highly recommend purchasing that by pass kit. It's just a real hassle/expensive to fix, it needs to be working for this bypass kit to work correctly. The more I think about this, his company is the only that makes it. Suggest to purchase one now, if you never use it you can always post it and sell it. https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/

My air injection pump burn up, I was able to located a used one, before I installed it I opened both pumps. The one that went bad had deteriorated pieces foam jamming the pump impeller, which caused the motor to burn up. I opened the top of the good one, inside is a block of regular foam! I guess this is what comes apart over time and james the pump. IMG_20151113_133554287_HDR.jpg IMG_20151113_133610609_HDR.jpg

I knew about the foam, I just figure it was a filter though

Thats exactly what it is for.... i wonder if some wire mesh backing would help it from rotting and falling into the impeller.

I would take it but I solved my problem already :sawzall: maybe someone else will put it to good use and not get reamed by Toyota.

That cheap piece of foam acts as a filter. Over time the foam filter deteriorates and it breaks loose jamming the motor. In which causes the pump to burn up. Not sure if your pump is 8 years or older, if it is suggest to at least get a fresh piece of foam.

On a 4 cylinder it took me about 5 to 10 minutes to remove and install it!

After 8 years that shitty piece of foam starts to crumble. I suggest to just replace it, or remove it and run the intake pipe from the throttle body intake tube. That way it's drawing clean air from the trucks air filter. Another option is purchasing a by pass kit, it only works if the system is completely operational at the time you install it! https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/

I wonder why in the hell they didnt do that in the first place!

I might consider preemptively removing that foam piece and running a crank case breather or something of the sort on the intake of the pump.

If they made it to last, they can't sell you a new $1,000 air injection pump!

I have the same year 12 dcsb this same thing happened to me but with only 28k miles. It was covered by Toyota. They told me it's not common in the tacomas more in the tundra's.

This is all very interesting, I've always wondered what that pump noise was on cold start ups. Now I know. I'm interested in the Hewitt technologies plug and play bypass kit, so I don't ever have to worry about it. But there website shows that it's only offer for the tacoma for 2005-2007 in the 4 cylinder 2 tr motor. I have the 4 cylinder 2 tr motor but in a 2011. Does anyone know if the kit will still work? Do they not offer a kit for my year because toyota changed something, therefore I don't need to worry about it? Thanks for the help.

I believe your warranty for the emission control system is 8 years or 80,000 miles. Contact your dealer about this, also contact Hewitt and ask https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/ . My 05, 4 cylinder pump went bad and was able to locate a used pump off of a 2011, it worked fine! I assume since your truck is still under warranty at this time why offer it!
