If you are like me and carry two spares here is an easy way to mount a second spare. The first photo shows the parts I am using. It is just an 8" 3/8 x16 bolt, washers, lock washer, and 3/8 threaded t-nut.
Simply slide the t-nut into the bed rail track, twist the tire to line up two of the lug nut holes with the track and insert the bolt. Super solid. Super cheap.

Super easy, thanks for the idea. Is that just a random extra wheel and tire?

Pretty much. A buddy had the BFG mudder off his wifes jeep. I took it to the tire shop and bought the cheapest wheel they had in Stock. It should work fine as I have rarely used my second spare but it has happened. When you do need it in the middle of Nevada it is priceless.

Ha! Perfect. Are you okay leaving your main spare underneath? I have some concern with it, and was considering storing both spares somehow in the bed.

What about the visibility out the window?

    I have a back up camera.

But in all seriousness it blocks it some. I have had campers on my last two Tacoma so it really does not hinder visibility too much. If I moved it to the driver side or the side rails it would be even less.

It does not bother me to have one underneath. Besides being a pain to check pressure it is a convenient place for it. This is my first short bed Tacoma so I feel short on bed space so no way am I putting two spares in the bed. Plus mine are 265/75s so one fits in the spot underneath. I have run 235/85r16 underneath before to save a little clearance since it is narrower.

You can get a spare tire lock OEM or aftermarket. I believe it's just a keyed end to the arm that you rotate to lower the tire.

There's not a large market for small tires on steel rims, only a desperate thief would bother to steal a tacoma spare

So is mine, but how many thieves are going to check that? Thieves are looking for the easy score, not a $50 tire that will take 5 minutes digging under a truck to get out.

If you plan on doing any serious off roading with your tire mounted like that, you will need to secure the tire to the bed as well. Over time you will tear the rail right off. I've seen high lift jacks do it

Good call, I agree. Next step is to get a ratchet strap to go over the top of the tire.
