HF is currently selling their 32 security bit set for $4.99- a great deal for thieves, even though they typically just walk into the store and take it whenever they want without resistance from the employees.

So, that idea of using just security bolts is out for better protecting my RTT that’s mounted on my rack. I was curious if anyone else here has a good and legitimately useful idea on how to secure things on their Prinsu or similar racks without relying on just using security bolts to hold the bars on. Those things are too easy to remove. My idea was actually to run a cable from the bottom of the RTT down to the frame behind the cab (I have a camper shell so the cable will be hidden between them).
I know it’s Friday, but please, legitimate answers only if you can help it!:)

Have you seen this site? A little spendy but so is your RTT.

Thanks, but it’s the bars on the prinsu rack that are the problem- they can be easily unbolted and the RTT goes away still attached to them. Hence why I was thinking of locking the RTT directly to the truck with a cable, making a quick getaway a little harder as the RTT will still be attached to the truck even if the bars are unbolted from the rack sides.

Someone going out of their way to take the time to undo your roof rails to take your tent has probably already scoped your truck out and brought cutters for a cable.

Best option is use stainless hex bolts for rack rails, fill over with jb-weld. Can still be slotted with a cutoff wheel and unscrewed but any thief willing to bother with lifting a RTT in the first place is already willing to dismantle your vehicle to steal.

At some point you have to just do the best you can and not go overboard to the point of a thief tearing shit up to get what they want.

Do people steal roof racks? Seems like it would be a lot quicker and easier to just steal the damn truck.

Check out Bryce Fasteners. I think they’re out of AZ. They manufacture security fasteners with unique bit patterns only available through them. I use them to attach my bed bars to the truck. And I use the WEW mounts for the tent. I have one of the 32 bit sets from HF, none of them are even close to fitting these fasteners. I don’t think they will sell the bits unless they can verify you’ve purchased hardware from them. They sell large quantities to commercial/industrial, and have a sister site that sells smaller quantities for guys like us. I’ll see if I can find a link for the smaller quantities.

Are these thieves rolling around in a box truck, or something?

Not the rack, it’s the almost $3k (today’s price) RTT I want to secure.

I don’t park in the city where it would be easy to steal. I know two people who lost them while parking near a PCT trailhead in a rural location with no homes nearby and hiking away from their truck. One of them lost their aftermarket wheels as well. At least the scumbag left his crappy wheels in place of them. They had time to do it.

The bars on a Prinsu rack are held onto the rails with just four bolts each- really easily removed.

Well, I wouldn't leave the RTT on there for good, if you have a garage, then build a hoist in your garage ceiling, so you will be able to take the RTT off and leave up in the ceiling until your next trip.

If no, then I suggest that you save up for new garage attach to your house if you have room or in the backyard. Or move.

The glue is a very good idea but I do remove the bolts when putting the tent in the garage and leave the bars still attached to it. In fact it’s very hard to take the tent off of the bars without removing it with the bars attached first. I made a 3-foot ratcheting box wrench extension handle out of a flat steel bar to access the bar clamp bolts to tighten them, there are no other ways to reach them with standard box wrenches or standard socket wrenches with extensions and elbow joints.

And camp in the garage? Naw, I do take it off to store it for winter. I even made a rolling rack out of furniture dollies to store it on. It’s just when I’m out there with it that I’m talking about.

What? they steal your RTT while you are camping? Not making sense. If that is in the case, then don't camp there again. find somewhere else better. He steal your RTT while he points a gun at you?

I didn't say camp in the garage, I said put RTT in the garage when not in use.

Yeah, we were camped after 4wheeling at the mall and it was bad. The mall cops just laughed when we told them it was the three bears with guns. I did get a photo of them as we ran away. They took the tent and all our stuff. Have you seen them?

    IMG_3322.jpg

In all jest, we use the truck as a base camp and do long dayhikes and return to the truck to sleep in it that evening - so it’s while away from it all day that concerned me. But thanks for the suggestions! :)

Yeah, I have never understood why people strap those expensive RTT things to their trucks and then drive around with them all the time? And to make things more laughable, they then feel the need to spend more money to keep people from stealing all this overlanding crap hanging from the truck. Instagram fads sure are amusing.
