Got down and looked at the undercarriage today and was surprised at what I saw. Little spots of rust has already started to appear throughout the underside. Little bits and pieces here and there, nothing huge, but definitely visible.

    Is this normal?

Regardless, I would say no. We all argue that it is not damaging anything and not a structural issue but it looks cheap. Some new cheap cars I have owned in the past: 2002 Isuzu Rodeo Sport, 2005 Nissan Frontier Nismo, 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2009 Honda Accord. No rust on the undercarriage. This includes cast iron parts, frames, bolts, etc.

Rust on springs and driveshafts is not an issue....it’s gonna happen no matter what you drive....

rust on the frame and body is what you have to watch out for.

It’s worth it to spend the money and undercoat your chassis with oil.

The unpainted metal on my Taco had some surface rust on it when I bought it. ...Those springs look a little suspect.

Curious... OP did you drive in the ocean or something? It's just surface rust and no big deal but it *does* look tacky.

Is it normal? Kinda. It’s surface rust but I can tell you I haven’t seen too many frames, leafs, driveshafts (a lot are aluminum now though) in new trucks that have as much of a problem as my Tacoma. I coated my frame as soon as I got it, because unless you’ve been living under a rock for 15 years you know the problems toyota has had with their first and second gen frames. Even the tundras. They claim to have used stronger material on the 3rd gen and they did spray some coating on parts of the frame but that’s not going to help much. Am I worried? Not really as I don’t plan to keep mine much longer. But I would be if I planned to keep this truck for several years or longer. Especially living in the salt belt with the 70” of snow we get a year. I’m thinking toyota will end up having problems with these frames as well. After seeing a few people’s door sills already starting to rust and bubble I’m thinking if not frame issues then some body issues. My advice is get some fluid film or some other rust preventative on now while you can if your that concerned and plan to keep the truck for a while. If your leasing or plan to trade it in, in a few years then I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Your leaf springs look like the ones on my 2011... you should clean and spray some rust converter paint on them. After it dries spray some fluid film. Where do you live man?

Live in mid-atlantic; plenty of snow/winter. Was delivered to dealer in Feb 2018. Surprised to see the rust so fast.

Makes sense now. Yeah man you need to coat it once a year with fluid film or another oil. I've used motor oil after an oil change when I lived in Groton CT. Currently live in Hawaii near the ocean. Truck is nearly rust free.

The busy bodies on here will get upset about using used motor oil but it works really well. Use a rag to apply it so you don't make a mess on your drive way.

Geez guys... OP it's normal. The people who have never seen rust under a vehicle have never worked on a vehicle or they live in Arizona or something. Here in the east snow states its norma.

Don't look at your brake calipers, rotors, drums, parts of the engine, oh hell just look at the painted side of the truck and stick with that. :anonymous:

Just cut the driveshaft so it doesn't spread. Containment is the key now.

I do plan to keep the truck until the wheels fall off. What do I do to protect it?

I've read a lot of people talking about fluid film, but also have heard some negative things.

I've also read about the product Corrosion FREE.

Do any of these void my warranty?

Also, I plan to take the vehicle offroading. Any extra considerations for rust protection?

More feedback, anybody? Do I have a rust problem already?
