Got my Relentless bumper delivered and I'm going to paint myself. Why do most of you prefer using the self-etching primer over epoxy? Is it ease of use and availability of the self-etching ( I do see it in rattle cans, in many auto shops and home centers).

Once I decide between the two DTM (direct-to-metal) primers, will I also need to use a filler primer between the DTM primer and outer single stage coat?

Primer filler is mainly used to cover up small scratch marks from sanding body filler. Use the etching primer, then your basecoat. Keep spare cans of the paint you used around so you can touch up impact marks.

Well... Rustoleum rattle can self-etch primer don't require filler primer, but the few Pro brands I looked up do (SEM, Eastwood). I want to fill in all the small grinding marks left from the manufacturing process.
    Thanks for your reply.

I will use self etching for painting chrome bumpers to match or any kind of bare metal. Anything that will be black or high use (sliders, bumpers) I will utilize epoxy as it is a much stronger finish and provides much better corrosion, chemical and rust resistance.

Epoxy will not require any primer and I can take a screwdriver to it and it won't scratch.

Primer filler is mainly for plastic parts to fill in gaps and scratches.

With that being said, VHT rollbar and cage black epoxy. Works wonders everytime.
