(serious..ish) What's with everyone buying a truck, spending 20k in mods, and selling a month later?

A very wise decision in my book..education debt just sucks big time and if you have little or none of it, you're in a great position.

I drove many the $500 (or less) war wagon in those years as one way to mitigate the expense of education.

For me my truck has been paid for since 2017, it meets all my needs and wants, and it's not like I'm going to need a bigger truck..be it for a family or for doing more than mine can.

I went from a 25 mile a day commute to working from home, which doesn't change my vehicle situation. But if I had a huge payment on something I barely drove anymore and didn't have a real need for, I think I would seriously consider selling if I could get more than I had into it and get something cheaper with the profit used for most/all of the purchase.

This thread is the most spiritually informative yet on this website. I knew TacomaWorld would be the place to witness the emancipation of humanity from the chains the technology.

A LOT of people see the appeal of off-roading, it looks tough and you can see the outdoors. Most of these people are fat bodies , keyboard people (not the alphabets)who aren’t used to sweating or doing hard physical work who have the money to buy such a vehicle and go way overboard building it. However on one hand having all the financial means and best intentions of becoming a person capable of actually doing it and using all the shit they bought, they are beyond overwhelmed, inexperienced and that’s when they swallow the humble pill.
You can spot the ones with more money than know how quick.

Totally true. The Instagram trucks are almost carbon-copies of every other truck on the ‘gram. Same shovel holder , same pelican case on the roof, same ditch lights, same racks, same bumpers, same wheels. But everything is totally spotless. Those king shocks just gleaming under there in bright sparkling blue.

My truck isn’t nearly as built as most Instagram rigs, and I admit I get jealous of what I call “fashion trucks”, but nothing bolted to my truck has never been used. Also my truck has been totally reliable and mostly care free other than a couple issues I was the author of. By not blowing a huge wad on aftermarket stuff I don’t need, I’ve been able to afford time off from work to use it.

However, I’m sure I’ll be on 35’s someday with a swing-out and eating my own words.

Who knows... we live in an age of instant gratification and little consideration of the future. Sometimes it’s the guy who wanted to get into the “off-road game” (I hate that phrasing) because they just got out of the track car game, or whatever other thing they got into on a whim because they caught a show on the Motortrend channel or something.
Some people buy a certain vehicle and dump everything possible into it because they want to be part of a lifestyle, or drop pics on the gram, or whatever other venue of attention-seeking they are into. Someone else might do it because they make a lot of money and really couldn’t care less about the loss as they move on from one thing to another. It’s fun, and next year they'll trade it in on a Jeep, or a Challenger, or a Tesla.
I imagine you consider purchases carefully if this behavior surprises you.
This is the way it is for me. I research and make careful decisions when I buy. We buy all our vehicles outright and keep them for 10-15 years. When I do things to them, I do the work and/or fab stuff myself.
Growing up, I learned to build things myself because there wasn’t money to just drop it off at a shop, and I wouldn’t go into debt to have it done. I saved, bought used, and built it myself. Different priorities.
Buying an expensive truck, dumping a metric crap-ton of money into it and selling it a year later isn’t the norm, these are really outliers that just get your attention.

They didn’t test drive it before they bought it, then modded the heck out of it to try and fix it! When that didn’t work…. On the chopping block!

I've been building my 4r for a few years now, a bit before this overland craze, and have had a few neighbors who swing by seeing me work on my rig, asking about overlanding. I tell them I'm not into that and soon after they either picked up a 4runner/Tacoma, did the usual Instagram famous mods to "kill the game" and get more views/likes with a 3" lift, scs wheels, bumpers, LEDs, skid plates, Instagram tag sticker, stickers, etc. and daily it and eventually sell it. Some have chatted to me after asking why I even own a 4runner because they just complain about their experience owning their modified rig... Bad gas mileage, not enough features, not enough space... Etc... I just laugh at them for getting it just for the likes.

Damn I’m in the same boat except but I don’t know when to stop. Good thing is my truck is paid off. And I have all these upgrades on my truck waiting to be installed but as I keep looking what’s the next thing to purchase I stop and think. I really don’t need it. It started with wheels and struts to rear sway bar and now I’m thinking of buying new front and rear shocks and lower control arms. I have spent at least 6 k on my truck so far it seems I’m about to spend another 6 or 7 what should I do? Should I sell my parts? Leave my truck stock? Buy another truck? Sell my truck? Keep my truck?
