Hey guys, I have a serious question. I got a 04 Tacoma 5 lug, 2.4l I’m wanting to drop the 4BT Cummins diesel into it, I bought the truck off a 17 year old kid and he laughed and said the axels will fall off from the torque and weight. Do you guys think the axels will actually fall off or take toll on the frame or do you think he was just jealous the trucks gonna be something it wasn’t when he had it?

You're definitely going to need to stiffen the frame, with only 265 Lb/Ft of torque your rear axle might survive, I think the 5 lugs used the same rear axle as the 6 lug.

You will need to do a body lift or serious trans tunnel modification to run a trans behind the 4BT.

Would I get the same transmission that comes with the 4BT?

Haven’t bought it yet, but I’m going to. That’s just why I’m trying to get some answers as soon as possible.

I would use a trans that is typically found behind the 4BT so you know it can handle the torque of the stock motor as well as any mods you have planned, I imagine there is decent aftermarket support for those transmissions.

There are only 2 options that I'm aware of for the front suspension that will work for the 5 lug with extra weight.
Long travel (Expensive, not a good option, but it's an option)
Custom Coilovers (Expensive, should be great quality, tunable, and should ride the best)

I think it might be the 7.5, I had a '95.5 5 lug with the 2.4 and 5 speed, if I remember correctly it had the 7.5.

With out alot of fabrication you arnt putting coil overs in the front, lock travel isn’t designed to handle weight, just soft and ment for off roading, im sure you can put beafy coils in the coil overs for the lt kit but then that is gunna stiffen your ride

There was a company that made coilovers for the 1st gen 5 lugs, it's possible, but they will be custom.
As for the LT, if you get the spring rate correct and then tune the shock you will have a very nice ride, it will just have a wide track width as well as some squeaks (probably couldn't hear them over the diesel though)

There is no physical way you are going to add an extra 400-500 pounds up front on a 5lug and think you will be fine. With a 7.5” axel it will probably break. You want the 8” axel with cromeoly shafts

Not stock, but with frame plating (strengthening) and modified front suspension he would be fine*, although I would recommend a brake upgrade.

*Not sure about the rear axle, I think the 8" would be a great idea, but I don't know that I would say it's a necessity
