Found a fresh rebuilt diff locally that I should be able to install my Spartan locker in. ATR is gonna be fun.

Threw the Jeep takeoffs on it and did a quick interstate test drive. These suckers are loud, BUT they're going to grip damn well I can tell. When it feels knobbly on pavement you know it'll grab rocks. Also the new wheels are visibly a bit lower offset, I should have removed the spacers, but it is what it is for now. Almost ready for ATR

I've been contemplating removing my spacers too, but I like the slight poke I have now....

I'm not a fan of poke myself, I really dig aussie style narrow rigs, but the utility on trail of being wide and stable is hard to beat. I think the big thing I'd get from no-spacer here is knowing how a 255/75 clears things on a lightly clearanced rig, if I've got gobs of space I know I'll be set for 285's if I go that route.

Decided to see how many pounds I've got spare for towing a trailer.

    Screenshot_20240823-193646.png

That would be like zero pounds. Gonna have to balance wheeling spec vs cargo on hand

Spartan Locker installed. Initial impressions: the clicks, pops, clangs, and bangs are exactly as wack as expected, BUT I've noticed that if I drive it more aggressively by intentionally accelerating through turns the locker doesn't act up at all, which runs counter to what I expected from reading online. Maybe the full time 4WD does a good job of distributing enough power forward that the rear is usually unloaded? Either way I'm happy it's as unobtrusive as it is.

No clue what's up there tbh. 200 of that is me, but for whatever reason I don't see the rest of my stuff quite adding up to 430lbs. No armor, no winch, just a cooler strapped to a plywood cut, recovery straps+soft shackles, backpack with air lines and compressor, toolbox weighing 50ish pounds, and a 2 gallon gas can. Maybe the fold up cargo shelf is pretty heavy?

Bigger tires can add to that, but I still think you're probably short a couple hundred lbs. Could be the scale was a little on the high side?

Could be, cat scales normally weight heavier loads than me lol. I'll hit a different one on the next trip and see if there's significant discrepancy

Putting some more ideas in here for me to reference later. The more I look at it, the less I like the idea of a swingout on the Runner, it's quite liable to get in the way and require a lot of strengthening when considering that this rig should offer some go-fast capability on top of the slow speed wheeling. Seems like the usual solution is internal in the cargo area, horizontal or vertical.

    IMG_20240828_194406_962.jpg IMG_20240828_194409_297.jpg

I really like vertical as it gives me the ability to keep the cooler next to it and I feel like it'll better allow for onboard air considerations.

I really wanted a swingout for a long time till I started watching others wheel with them and watched them flex and bounce on the back. I've since changed my mind.

Between that and seeing basically zero go-fast guys use one (for good reasons I assume) I'll pass. Great for people who want max clearance or max storage, but when it's just me packing for me, I'd rather gain ground clearance with load stability.

Went to the mountain, wheeled Friday without big issues (needs sliders/skids/rear tube bumper) and I broke a CV on the trail today so that got replaced with an AutoZone part for the drive home. Was a good weekend.

Did a little work on the rear drawer system. It's coming along. That cubby left of the cooler slide is for dry foods but I'm not sure if it'll be a cabinet, drawers, or double drawers.

Been a minute. Not dead, but my transfer case actuator has shit the bed and thinks it's in 4lo when it's in 4hi. Turns out when your vent disintegrates and you cross a water crossing it'll fuck up the sensors. I've got a pick-a-part transfer case from a truck that died of rust, so I might be able to fix this for $100, but if not I'm diving into a case rebuild/actuator replacement.

Got this fixed this weekend. Used a 12v Milwaukee handheld battery and a couple jumpers to run the motor into 4lo (which is where the truck thought it was, when it was really in 4hi). Reset the code, used the in-cab switch to exercise it a bit, all is well. I think there was just dirt in the encoder inside the actuator.

Man, I wish I had that kinda luck. My luck 3 other things would be broke when I took a look. Last diff oil change I found a small chip off a tooth. So I'm so looking forward to the next oil change to see if it was a fluke or time to regear.... :bananadead:
