Very interesting...I've always heard claims of push starting, but no one could confirm.

"The first generation of iron TorqueFlites had a rear pump as well as a front pump, allowing the automatic-equipped cars to be push started. It probably wasn't officially endorsed, but it worked in emergencies, and many people knew about it (C. Paul Kozoriz.) For 1966, the rear pump was eliminated because the push-starting capability was rarely used (Dan Stern). "

It wasn't kept around for long... and I don't think we have that little feature anyways so should be careful about generalizing.

When I had my 5-speed Rodeo out 'expeditioning' I'd always do my over-night parking on a slope so I could roll it down hill if the battery went dead. That was a lesson hard learned when brand new battery went bad and I wasn't in position to roll. I wanted auto this time, but with severe reservations for that reason.

Thanks for repeating the explanation...as everyone already pointed out, I missed the left turn to operating in D and was speaking (engine behaviour-wise) about neutral...

There seems to be as a semantics or terminology thing too as saying the injectors being turned 'off' implies to me something besides just not delivering any fuel for a few strokes. Too, I would expect there's a need to keep the cats warm during, say, a prolonged down-hill coast (to continue the example offered earlier.) However you want to term it...the injectors turned back 'on', whatever...but I expect there will be some fuel delivery over some duration of time.

But to me that means the injectors weren't turned 'off' since by that definition even under full throttle acceleration the injector is turned 'off' during most of the cylinder's duty cycle. UNLESS the FI system used here is continuous injection? Now THAT would be interesting to learn, and fully explains why they would be turned 'off' during a coast down!

Then I'd have wound up in California. That's too far left.

    Know where I'm coming from??

    Interesting...

"During closed throttle deceleration...fuel delivery is not necessary...the ECM will not open the injectors under certain decel conditions. The ECM will resume...at a calculated RPM.
    ...
Fuel Cut Tau is a mode employed during long deceleration time...during these times excess oxygen would enter the catalytic converter...to prevent this the ECM will very briefly pulse injectors"

Yes, it does reduce the fuel delivery quite a bit (not that I really doubted that point) but WILL keep delivering the juice. I just got waylaid by the term since the injectors are no more "turned off" than they are between intake strokes.

Does it reduce it more than at idle if dropped into neutral? Hey, who cares: I doubt anyone could ever measure the difference and I think the engine braking is more important for safety anyway so: leave it in drive!

If you're interested, I found the article at

    http://www.autoshop101.com/

and it's quite specifically about Toyota vehicles.

O have driven my 2015 tacos over 65mph put it reverse to use my back up camera to look at my hitch. I do it all the time if I hear a sound that gets my attention when I’m towing something. Nothing happens I just return her to drive. You may lose a little speed but other then that it’s fine

Learn how to navigate downhills with the brake. Watch the speedo or tach, apply just enough brake to maintain your speed, adjust accordingly. Your passengers will thank you. Truck drivers do this all day long in the mountains, brakes never overheat.

My wife picked up on what I was doing, now she does it. I didn't even have to train her.

I'm no mechanic, but I would think shifting into low gear would put undue stress on the tranny, or just not work (like reverse). I'll just use the tranny for what it's designed for, and use the brakes for what they're designed for.
