Thinking of going with OC shingles from lowes. Not the 3 tab traditional, but the "3d" look.

I've heard bad things in the past about OC from lowes, but havent heard anything in the past 10 yrs or so. Any bad things recently?

A better brand I should go with? $35 a bundle is what the OC are going for.

I got mine from Home Depot although I wouldn't have thought twice about getting them from Lowes. I don't know anything about the 3D look ones you're getting though. What was the issue with them? I went a little overkill and went with Grace Ice and Water Shield over the whole roof, not just the first 3'.

Architectural composition shingles is what you are after. A basic 3 tab is cheap but the looks are to be desired and the longevity is less. Don't be too quick to jump on the lifetime warranty mumbo jumbo. Also, is metal an option?

Architectural shingles are what i roofed with after the last hurricane. 40-50 year and they dont stain.

X2 on this, and by OC I assume you mean Owens Corning? I think thats only shingle brand I have ever used. So far no Issues, I used them on my cabin, the 3D ones you are speaking of, and they take a beating, and no problems. I believe they have a 30 and up year warranty, so they last longer than the 3 tabs.

We thought about metal, but like the look of shingles better. I know metal is pretty much forever, but we just dont like the look.

Here is a pic of the house from the real estate listing a few years ago. My wife thinks metal wont look as good as shingles.

Nice house, and I have to agree with you about the look of a metal roof. Thats the trade off, doesn't look the greatest, but you would probably never have to touch it for as long as you owned the house.

Oz, the algae block, is that too prevent the black streaks you can get on the roof?

Is there a difference in putting on metal vs asphalt shingles? I will be putting on a new roof at some point and gonna do it myself, since I have no valleys.

Metal is pretty straight forward if you have no valleys , dormers , or roof penetrations like chimneys or skylights

That's the stuff I used. It's pricey but it's self healing and will seal around all the nail holes. I just re-shingled the back portion of my house so I used it on the entire area but if you just do 2 strips at the bottom and all the valleys, that's all you really need. That will protect you against ice dams and keep water out of the typical intrusion points. It's very expensive to cover an entire roof with this stuff.

Also, be careful once this stuff is down, it can get VERY slippery. One of the guys I was working with took a tumble because he tried to stand up on it and some of the shingle grit got under his feet. Just a word of caution if this is your first roofing job :)

Yep, I have one spot on my roof, its on the one angle where the sun really doesn't hit. It may never see sun, I've never really looked when the sun is close. It doesn't really bother me, does not seem to be hurting the roof at all.
